The whole point of references is to verify... if NONE of the references check out, someone is trying to pull a fast one. It could well be LE or someone else with an agenda. It doesn't matter. The fact they are being untruthful tells a bigger story. Just say NO! I'd suggest you cut off contact. Do not answer why... giving information might foster a harder to identify scam.
