Yes WB, my misadventure pales in comparison to your adventure posted just a few threads down. Certainly this was not the first time I've been cancelled on... But it was the first time I knew it was coming long before it actually happened.

I couldn't agree more to the business aspects of the hobby. Pretty much throw everything you know about sales and marketing out the door, and you have the "Hobby". But certainly not all, I know several gals that practice excellent marketing skills and have even learned a few things from following them. Others just leave me scratching my head.

Have you ever had a feeling like your appointment with a provider was going south long before you even put the key in the ignition or pulled out of the driveway?

I guess that is the feeling I had last week, after making an appointment to see a “reviewed” provider. She claimed she was offering incall in an area of town until the next week, so I felt comfortable making a Thursday appointment at 1:00pm. The time was agreed to and a meeting was set.

Thursday arrived, and after checking my e-mails in the morning, I quickly scanned BP and discovered an ad for a provider that claimed she would be in one area of town until noon, then available in another area of town after 3:00pm. This alone was not alarming, as many hotels even with late check out require you to be gone by noon, and most hotels won’t allow early check in until 2:00 or 3:00pm. What had me scratching my head was, this was the provider I had a 1:00pm appointment with. Okay, I thought to myself, she must have this covered somewhere… I always try to be optimistic, but something already didn’t feel right.

11:02am – I receive an email simply stating “Looking forward to our 1:00pm appointment today ;)

Okay I felt this was her way of confirming our time, before giving me her hotel information. But in the back of my mind I can’t get the ad posting to stop haunting me.

11:05am – I replied simply “Me too!”

Expecting the next email to give me hotel location.

11:08am – I receive another email claiming: “I’m so sorry, out of no where something bad just came up! I am going to have to cancel.”

Okay stuff can happen, and I didn’t have the heart to tell her nowhere is one word. But I guess, I saw this coming long before the email arrived in my inbox.

11:13am – I replied: “I am sorry to hear that, I hope you’re okay. Perhaps we can reschedule?”

I never heard another word from her, although by 3:00pm she had updated her location in her ad, so I assume whatever the “Something Bad” was, it was not bad enough to deter her from updating her ad listing.

I wasn’t born yesterday, and don’t assume for a minute anything “Bad” ever happened, other than she had decided to change locations for whatever reason. But wouldn’t a more mature solution to the problem be simple honesty. A note stating: “I am so sorry, I need to change my incall location and will be unable to accommodate our 1:00pm appointment, I hope we can reschedule for later today, or tomorrow.” This would have been far more credible, than manufacturing “Bad” things. And in business we’re all trained to do what’s needed to save the sale.

Okay, I can’t be alone in seeing a train wreck coming long before it’s left the station, what tales can fellow hobbyists (or providers) share? After all misery likes company

because it happens daily to a lot of clients.  And vice versa.  Only thing I have to add is this realm isn't typical "sales."  There is no rationality when it comes to the hobby.

That I hear, is "My (take your pic of close relative)" is dying, has cancer, is in the hospital, etc.

For all I know some or all of them could have been legit. I try to chalk it up to life happening.  But one wonders when it comes up as often as it has.

A few of those providers are well reviewed...one is even shilled frequently here--none of them have had a history of cancelling or being flaky that I know of.

One of the reasons why I think it's good to have a back up option or two in mind (someone who you know is working that day and might be available) if you really want to see someone, even if you have something arranged with one of the better providers

Best not to lose any sleep over it. That's life in the big city.
