Anatomy of a Sting.

An ad was posted on the Ventura, California Backpage by a 22 year old who offered a GFE for $80.00 for half an hour, and $100.00 for a full hour.  There were three photos posted with her ad  They appeared to be a girl in her 20's with a hot body.  She was wearing a bikini in all three photos, and there was nothing shown beyond her bikini.  Her facial features were also blurred.

I called the phone number listed in the ad  A girl answered the phone.  I told her I saw her ad on Backpage and would like to see her.  She asked me when I would like to meet.  We discussed available times and then settled on a late morning appointment.  She gave me the name and address of the motel where she was staying.  I was familiar with the motel.  I have seen two other providers at the same motel.  She told me to call her when I arrived at the motel and she would give me the room number.

I arrived at the motel about 45 minutes early.  I drove around the parking lot and checked out the adjoining streets to see if I could spot an LE car.  The motel consists of several two story buildings in an irregular configuration.  I made a couple of passes through the parking lot to see if I could see any activity.  I didn't notice anything unusual since most of the activity at that time of the day is maids cleaning rooms.  I parked in a strip mall next to the motel and called when it was my appointment time.  She gave me the room number which was on the second floor facing the back parking lot.  Rather than go up to her room I stayed in the car and watched.  There was an outdoor walkway around the building with a wrought iron railing.  Her unit door was blocked by a wall but I had a clear view from the side.

About 20 minutes after my appointment time I saw a car pull into the rear lot and park.  A guy walked up to the second floor and I saw him knock on the provider's door.  The door opened and he entered.  I was too far away to see who answered the door.  I looked at my watch to check the time.  About 18 minutes later another guy arrived, parked in the rear lot and entered the providers motel room.  The first guy never came out.  I timed the third guy who arrived about 23 minutes later.  The same thing happened.  He entered but never came out.

Less than five minutes after the third guy entered the motel room, the door to the adjacent room opened.  A Ventura County deputy sheriff in street clothes, wearing a gun and a badge on his belt, walked out and looked around.  A grey colored Ford Crown Victoria pulled up to the foot of the stairway.  There were two deputy sheriff's in the car.  The car had a screen between the front and back seat. Two deputies escorted four handcuffed men out of the adjoining motel room and down to the waiting car.  It was very smooth.  The car was loaded and they were gone in less than one minute.  Unless you were looking for something specific you would have never seen it happen. Less than 15 minutes later another guy arrived and entered the motel room.

This is the third sting I've encountered.  The first one was on Sepulveda Blvd. in the San Fernando Valley ten years ago.  I wrote an account of what happened and posted it on this board at that time.  The second one also occurred at a motel on Sepulveda Blvd in 2006.  I wrote a piece about that sting and also posted it on this board.  The first two were conducted by LAPD and the third was conducted by the Ventura County Sheriff's Department.  All three operations were amazingly similar which leads me to believe LE has a tried and true way to conduct a sting.

The first red flag was the Backpage ad  The alleged provider did not have a history of posting on Backpage.  She also had no TER reviews.  She had a super nice figure but nothing was showing that you wouldn't see on the beach.  The price was way too low for a GFE.  When I called she didn't discuss any details over the phone.  She didn't hesitate to tell me which motel she was using.  All three stings occurred on the second floor with the  doors facing outside.  She never called when I missed my appointment.  Craigslist was used for the first two stings.

I stopped by a law firm in Ventura where I used to work.  The firm subscribes to a service that captures all the criminal filings filed in Ventura Superior Court.  The service previously delivered hard copies of all the filings to the office, but now the information is available online.  You can sort the filings several ways.  I sorted out prostitution arrests.  There were 19 arrests made at the motel on the day I was there.  The narratives in each report were basically the same.  None of the arrestees were questioned or advised of their Miranda rights.  Whatever story the arrestees had no one would hear what they had to say other than their defense attorney.  The DA and the defense attorney are only concerned with what is in the arrest report.  The defendant never gets a chance to tell his side of the story unless he takes the stand and that very rarely happens.  I would imagine all of the defendants will plead guilty or no contest,  pay a fine, be put on summary probation and maybe do some jail time if they are repeat offenders.

Be careful out there.  LE stings are very efficient and cost effective

To me a RED FLAG is being ridiculously low rate for the time / service advertised.  In my area, I expect to pay TWICE that rate as a minimum.  Now it could have been an upsell or other scam...  but I would never have gone.
Second RED FLAG is NO TER reviews.
Horny guys check their brains at the door...  when the voice in their head says NO WAY!

Thanks for posting

...early but did not see anything unusual.  She gave you the room number but you stayed in your car instead of going up to the room.  Why?

It seems like you had no intention of going through with the appointment even though there was nothing out of the ordinary.  Why did you bother making an appointment if you thought it was a sting?

The ad was highly suspect by the way it was written. The low hourly rate compared to the half hour rate and the fact that the girl was covered decently in a bikini was suspicious.  I have had pretty good luck with Backpage on the Gold Coast.  But you have to be cautious. There are not a whole lot of TER reviewed girls up here.

I went to the motel early to see if there was anything irregular.  I couldn't watch her room since she wouldn't give me the room number until I called at my appointment time.  It is impossible to see all the rooms from one location due to the configuration of the buildings and there is a front side and a back side to each building.  A hobbyist could have easily arrived and entered her room while I was there but on the other side of one of the buildings.  Once I knew her room number I was able to get a visual on her door.  I didn't want to drive around through the parking lot more than a couple of time since that might raise suspicion.  I didn't want to miss the original appointment time if she was legitimate. But at the same time, I would rather err on the side of caution than walk into a sting.   If no one had arrived at her room within a reasonable amount of time, or I saw someone arrive and leave between a half hour and an hour that would indicate she was probably legit.  Finally I would call her and ask her to meet be at the bottom of the stairway or on the walkway at the top of the stairs.  If she refused to leave the room I would not have continued with her.  LE wouldn't chance a scuffle occurring on the narrow second floor walkway. They want to be in total control.   Also someone arriving 20 minutes after my appointment was a dead giveaway since I had made a one hour appointment

I respectfully disagree.

BOTH rates are below prevailing rates for my area & I presume yours too.
$80 half, $100 hr are off by half.
However, in my experience, a half hour Full Service rate is 3/4 or 7/8 of the full hour rate.  So on a hypothetical $200 per hour (about minimum for my area, and obviously others higher), the half hour FS rate is $150 or $175.
There are some who offer cheap half hour blow & go sessions at that time of the month...

So my suspicion is not on the percentage of the hourly rate but that both are too low to be credible.

I respectfully disagree here.  Bikini pictures are not, of themselves, suspicious.  Some gals don't put it all out there.  It depends somewhat on your local areas & local ordinances.  It doesn't say sting to me...  maybe a rub & tug or upsell or a scam...  Or stolen pictures...    On second thought, I'd be expecting more skin from a FS date.
This is where using a photo checking service would be valueable.

Add the fact there were NO reviews...   NO

Again thank you for this thoughtful discussion.

If you use the word "donation", you are implying there is a loan. This makes the sex commercial. GFE is a code word that is used for public solicitation.  Don't use these words. Words get you into allot of trouble.

The new definition of prostitution in Black Law's Dictionary 9th edition is commercial sex.

When was the last time you donated your time, money, articles of clothing, etc and expected them to be returned or paid back for said items?

I am not suggesting you need to change the hobby. You can do it anyway you like. I am pointing out that if you make statement that you pay afterwards, it makes it commercial.

It is free choice. I am just suggesting alternatives for people who want to built a strong legal defense.

It don't qualify as a gift if you jump into the sex act.  (See UNITED STATES of America v. Lynnette HARRIS and Leigh Ann Conley 942 F.2d 1125).

I've done some of same type of surveillance, prior to a hotel visit, if there is no TER review and the pictures look too good.  While I have never had any difficulty with the law, I did walk away from one situation that ended up being an LE bust for several other fellows.  It pays to be cautious and to stick to TER reviews if possible.

Thank you for the post and for sharing the valuable information.

You played very smart; you watched the show from a distance instead of walking into the sting! I also drive around provider's in-call location a couple of time to check any LE activities. But I am not sure if that does any good. I would think LE would be in unmarked vehicle and would be dressed normal to be undercover; it would be difficult to spot or notice any LE presence.  I Google search provider's phone number, if she has been in several locations and has advertised on several websites for a period of several months, I feel safe to visit her. But hay, this hobby is risky and there is no foolproof way to avoid LE. Good luck and thanks again for a very useful post.

Thank you so much for this. Maybe one day the lunacy of victimless crimes will go away.
Thank you again.
