In some spread out layouts, I've only used the main entrance to check in / out.  It was much shorter to use the wing entrance nearer our room.  That's why your key card opens it.

Right, looking like you have something to hide...  draws attention.  I sometimes enter through the main entrance but exit through a wing exit...  If I am not a registered guest, but a guest of someone who is registered, then I don't have a key card & many hotels have all entrances/exits key card required...  sometimes night only but others 24 hours.

Excluding meetings where the lady lets me in...  of course management is wise to it but chooses to ignore...  wing exits are swiftly exit & walk briskly away.
Hanging around a hotel parking or other doors IS suspicious...  thieves & muggers do so.

Because of distances I travel I typically arrive early, locate the call point & withdraw to the local coffee shop to play with my mobile devise & enjoy a brewski...  returning when I can go directly into the entrance.

I do not believe in coincidences.  Ever.  That door is being survailed for a reason.  Not knowing what the reason is, I'd (as a hobbiest) avoid that door like the plague.

So I saw a provider two months ago in the suburbs of Chicago and I noticed a vehicle parked near the rear door with what looked to be a security camera with an infrared LED ring for night vision filming perched upon the rear of the roof.  I'm very familiar with the equipment, being that I have worked with it in the past. The camera itself was pointed right at the rear exit which let out from the stairwell. I thought nothing of it and figured it was my paranoia. Then a few days ago I visited another provider in the same hotel, and guess what, the same large SUV with black tinted windows and an infrared camera was parked in the exact same spot. This time as I exited I covered my face. I feel providers should be aware as well as hobbyists, just not sure where or how to post the info. Pretty certain, LE is compiling faces, and possibly license plates.

with the name of the hotel.

By the way, there is nothing to be gained by using a rear stairwell as opposed to the main lobby.  In fact, you call attention to yourself by doing so.  You can depend on the fact that there will be cameras recording you in both locations.

I know because my firm installs these.

Thousands of people go through the front door, no one is going to pay a bit of attention to you as long as you look like you belong. Skulking around the rear entrance is quite a different matter.

The hotel is having problems with employee theft and is monitoring the rear exit.

One thing I know is I'm not that important that a LE would want to check or record for any reason. I guess that's question you need to ask your self.
Oh and I'm thankful they do that for the bad guys only .  Your perspective might need to be adjusted lol.  People go in in out of places in this world all day long . Silly guy
