stupid the people running the rail system are.

I have traveled to Minneapolis quite a bit in the past for modeling and providing I used to always have a car service to drive me around the city due to such reasonable prices but lately I have been catching the metro. Now maybe its just my criminal background thinking this (totally kidding) but every time I buy a ticket which has been at least 20 times no one ever checks it. Am I the only fool buying a ticket or is there something I don't know.??????

That's probably enough of a deterrent for most.

As with any other public space you choose to inhabit these days, you can assume you are under constant surveillance while riding the local light rail.  Recorded passenger volume is measured against fares sold and enforcement is directed to areas where there is discrepancy.  There is also the factor of random enforcement and fare checks which does happen.  Of course, there will always be scofflaws who flout the public good for their own private benefit.  They are called libertarians.

I hate to be judgemental even though I know some of these people are not paying. Thanks for answering  my question so quickly I knew something was up ;)

... to and from the airport a dozen times a year, but I've seen Transit cops checking tickets, and had mine checked, a half dozen times in two years. Though the fellow who couldn't produce a ticket just got put off at the next stop with no violation written up. Frequency maybe depends on time of day.

I think it's probably that you're not on when they are, usually by the mall and airport the transit cops are around.

I've been riding the metro in Minneapolis for a decade and nobody has EVER asked for my ticket. So strange, since I'm from the Bay Area and we'd be kicked to the curb in a heartbeat if we tried riding BART for free.

They don't even have the barriersat some stations like the BART or CTA has either . We can just stroll on, no problem lol. Only ONE time in 2005 I was asked to show my card .

I think one of the main reasons is that most who ride the metro do train + bus as our trains really are pretty limited.  Not saying no one goes against this, but I would guess the vast majority of riders are taking a bus to/from the train station, and since the tickets are the same metro probably would end up spending more money policing it then they would actually make back in fines/lost fares.

This is Minnesota... Don't worry, the taxpayers usually pick up the tab for this and hundreds of other subsidized programs..
