Your strategy appears to be a winning one. I think you have at least 2 advantages: (1) a small midwestern town will keep costs lower than places like NYC, LA, and SF; (2) a college town will provide a larger pool of young hotties with financial need and hook-up tendencies than other places.
I agree about the lack of compensation (other than dinner or drinks) to meet. Some guys offer cash, but I think it is unnecessary and sends the wrong signal. I am very straight forward with my communications and bio stating clearly that I'm looking for a no strings attached (NSA) friends with benefits (FWB) in return for some financial assistance. I do offer to meet for coffee or lunch to see if we have a connection, but I do not offer any financial compensation for a M&G (and have always turned them down if they ask). Most wind up going straight to bed w/ me on the first meeting, though I have used M&Gs to verify their looks, if there's any doubt.
I wind up PMing or texting a few times to find out what part of town their located in and if they can provide a place to meet (or not), since this determines how much I can provide them ($). I typically offer 200-300 depending on who is providing the meeting place. Mind you, I'm in a mid-western, mid-size city so would not expect these kind of arrangements to work in bigger cities but has proven very successful for me.

No matter as to how solid or sophisticated the firewalls may deemed to be, mostly because of some human f*ck up whether in the security code or some Admin getting duped opening the wrong link, super hackers could still attack a seemingly impenetrable "secured" site.
Word to the wise: be very careful if you are married and / or stand to lose a lot if exposed.

Went to SFO on a biz trip and wasn't getting responses from the pros in the area (may be since I was in the east bay and unable to come to them). So I tried SA and connected with several young hotties by PM. A few were higher priced than what I wanted to spend, which is perfectly OK, but several were right on point and quite willing to get together.
I picked one and we met for drinks at my hotel bar to see how we got along, with the the mutual understanding that if we did, we'd go back to my room for some private time that I'd compensate her for. I agree that it is a feasible approach when traveling. I've seen SBs in 4 different cities. Buddies of mine have seen SBs while traveling for work to at least NYC, SF, Chicago, DC, Philly, and Miami. Some SBs don't want to see a guy just 1 time, but many are open to that option. If you are a repeat visitor, that increases your chances. My fave SB was in a different city than me.
I've heard that SB rates in SF are high, perhaps behind only NYC. You did well for $300.

You can find a lot of hotties for $300-$500. Some are definitely more expensive than that. It seems to be a little less expensive than NYC and possibly SF and a little pricier than DC. At least, that's my impression.
