Some of my very favorite clients were in the same boat as you (no current references or easy employment verification). But the truth is, as long as they were willing to complete the rest of my screening process I had no problem meeting them this way. Honestly, who doesn't prefer getting to know someone over lunch or cocktails first? I find it always makes for a more relaxed, natural kind of date.
