Don't do it

I can understand a deposit if the lady is required to travel far or if she has to book an incall, but if she's a local and she doesn't have to book a hotel room, there is no reason for her to ask for a deposit.  The chances of this going wrong for you is not worth it.

I recently contacted an independent provider in the area (TER reviewed) and requested to book an appointment that was about 3 weeks ahead.  I had a number of practical reasons for booking this far in advance (e.g., wanted to see this specific provider, it is a time I know I can host, etc.).

Somewhat surprisingly, I was asked for a deposit in order to hold the date.  I am admittedly ignorant about this practice (I've had no prior experience like this) but I wanted to know if this is typical or at least reasonable.  After all, I'm not sure what would prevent the provider from flaking out on the appointed date after getting the deposit and leaving me short changed.  On the other hand, I understand that flaking out is what she is trying to protect herself from as well.  I've heard of cancellation fees but not advance deposits.  I've also never seen this provider in the past.

Anyone care to shed light on this practice or opine?

Thanks.

I have run across it a few times - in all instances, the deposit policy was on the website.

If this is true in her case, then it is more than fair & proper.

On the other hand, if this is a "complete surprise", you have the option to reply that you are not comfortable with the idea and offer to contact her again closer to the day...

voted "Best of Boston" nail salon's in Cambridge.
I found by a search on internet. I called yesterday and closest available wasnt until Sunday!
They required my credit card number because yes if i cancel there is a cancelation charge.
Where I AM VERY serious about showing this doesnt even make a difference. I KNOW I PLAN ON GOING. I also know they may have 27 or more requests for a mani and pedi appt between now and sunday . If I cancel the teeny fee the manicurist will collect.
That isnt going to cover how much trouble or money she has lost over my drama and disorganization. Say i no show ect.
I didnt give it a second thought and in event i cancel or couldnt make it , I d be more than happy to pay the cancelation fee. It be the least i can do for doing that to some one like all of us trying to put food on the table and get by. It isnt gonna make up for it because she may not be able to fill that slot last min and now may just eat the 170 I wouldve been paying her. She may not be able to land a "walk in " on a sunday to fill my absence.
Another customer with 170 looking for a "carcinigen free french gel mani and pedi with 20 dollar tip"
Just may have called to want my time slot too but by sunday afternoon they cant go calling them all back and say "Hey, Wait ! I can do it still around?"
So say 5 -7 people cancel that week that could be 170 or in this business case i d say 170-500 they offer facial s and much more . Most women make a afternoon of it  and get a few treatments. So 5-7 cancelations will mean an average of 1,400 wage loss that week.
Do the math for monthly and its more like 4,200.
For me i gave my debit info gladly with out a second tho0ught. Having been through Cosmetology School and also seeing the loss it causes and how fast you fall behind when people cancel.
I know for me i had 4 cancelataions this week. All of whom i emailed with and spent a bit of time with on the phone, Then around 15 that called or emailed and then never wanted to book.
I told my landlord i d be by with rent wed , thinking i had 2 appts tuesday. I actuallty jogged home tuesday morning from a doctor appt to make it for the guy only for him to email me that "his son got hit in head with baseball bat" cant make it.
Then the tues evening guy canceled. I paid 25 for a cab home from counseling in everett to make it in time for him. I wouldve taken a bus if i knew he wasnt gonna come.
It definetly is tough when they cancel on ya and there were others you turned away you couldve booked that day.
Then thurs a appt for outcall to hotel at wharf area. He never even email to cancel.
i think mainly emailing typing ect with all those people gets tiring ater a while then no appt in the end, I chateed with about 11 guys through pm that wanted to discuss meeting but at end of lengthy convo's they dont wanna schedule.
SO this week i made 400! just enough to cover a new pair of thigh highs a man n pedi a spray tan, and an eye brow shaping and waxing and lip .
and then water.
wont be payin any bills or rent this week. And wont have any emergency money in a bank, which i dont.
For me its stressful cuz i am possibly goinj to get electricity shut off, internet disconnected,
so i just may start doing the make a deposit thing,
I lowered my rates and have a half hour for massage and gfe available maybe that will help? xo
but yes give her the deposit, she is running a business like us all and just tryin to keep above water. i know all the cancelations and all the guys that pm me i mean its only ten minutes but when like 15 a week are emailing back n forth then cancel and dont book, It has left me tired, and also worried!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The provider thought that since I was booking so far in advance, she figured it was a long extended evening. I guess it makes sense in that case to request a deposit if it's for the whole night.

We cleared things up. Sorry if I caused any confusion on the board. I appreciate the responses on this.
