I adopted a 9 year old dog 2 years ago with a heart murmer that I was told was going to be fatal. Everything is fatal anyway but the point was I was pissed because it was hidden from me and I would have taken him anyway but it would have been nice to be prepared for this as we bonded immediately. Fast forward two years and he's still with me and doing fine. He was languishing away at the shelter and truly needed tlc and not too much else. Get an older dog is great advice they are great and provide unconditional love asking for nothing in return. Fabulous advice Abby and those that take it will be justly rewarded

some of you may know I lost my good friend Gilda (my dog) of 11yrs recently.
She was a sweetheart.

So I am just now starting the process of looking into a new dog.
When I say *new* I mean new to our family.
I always rescue dogs I see there are so many tht need homes and I really am not sure I want a puppy.
I prefer an active breed a lab golden some kinda mix.

So the question here is does anyone know if a shelter near them is a good place to start
I have rescued thru Baypath before and it was a disaster the dog was a wreck, poor thing... so they are out.oh we kept the crazy messed up dog anyway...lol it wasn't his fault he was traumatized by his past. good dog in the end.

so any help or suggestions would be good Im very lonely without a furry friend...

thanks all

I have 2 australian shepherds.  They are very active and such sweet dogs.  I don't come across too many in shelters, but there is a rescue league that covers most of the northeast (www.aussierescue.org)

North East All Retriever Rescue.......all rescue dogs are generally fostered in a private home prior to adoption.  Usually 4-6 weeks to access the dog for any issues and develop a path for correction. I have fostered a number of retrievers for this group.  The process sometimes seems excessive but they really try to match the dog to the individual......

I had two strays, off the street pickups. Both were 15 year friends. Their passing was two of the worst days of my life.
You'll find the perfect match because you want to. A friend has two Satos and is mad about them.

I do appreciate it.

If you Google the breed name and the word rescue you will come up with many responses.
I'm sorry for your loss. I have had many dogs throughout the years and loosing them never gets easier.  It's a shame that breeders do not breed for health and longevity rather than to arbitrary show standards.  Many purebreds have pathologies bred into them.  You may have better luck with a mixed breed.
I hope you find a great friend.

I found my last dog via petfinder.com. She was about 10-years-old and at the Providence animal shelter. Adoption fees at the time were $10! - about 5-6 years ago. I did leave a donation though, because it was such a sad place with many stressed dogs parking 24/7 and overwhelmed shelter workers.

Older dogs are calm, house-broken and usually act grateful to have a second chance. The shelter are usually good to start you on free or discounted medical services, if they need any.

While a puppy is a 10-15 year committment, an older dog may be better for those who anticipate moves and major changes a few years down the line

I did not know that. So many wonderful senior dogs out there that need a 2nd chance to live a happy life they truly deserve!

I have rescued two dogs that I had the privilege of calling my best friends for nearly 17 years.  Both have passed within the year and are forever missed. I rescued one of them from Dog Orphans http://dogorphans.com/our-orphans/

I had a very good experience with them and would look there myself.

Best of luck in finding a new friend!
