You might consider joining one or more of the verification sites, Preferred411 lets their providers indicate if they are newbie friendly which might help you out some.

Right hand corner? You mean the e in the upper left corner, don't you? Self-help appears on the left at the bottom under "My Quick Links. At least that's how I found it.
