I am asking this question primarily because I have seen more and more girls filming all their own content and not even working for the major companies and labels. Does that still make her a porn star in you guys opinion? Or does she have to have credits from companies like Vivid, wicked, naughty america, bang bros etc to be considered a bonafide porn starlet.

This is very subjective question and there will be many viewpoints...It would be like asking which is the greatest NFL team; 78 Steelers, 84 49ers, 85 Bears, (or insert other year/team)...Lots of possible answers..
I look for credits from well known companies ie; Brazzers, Naughty America, New Sensations, Digital Playground, Vivid, Pure Passion, etc....
I leave for LA in 2 days & I anticipate meeting several stars represented by the aforementioned companies above...
To be considered a Star, I believe a lady needs at least 200 credits. In my opinion, I believe there are 3 groups. Actresses that do under 200. Stars such as Rachel Star, Bonnie Rotten, Skin Diamond , Kagney Lynn Karter, etc. Then there are mega stars such as Ginger Lynn, Jill Kelly, Asa Akira, Jenna Jameson, etc. Again this all my perspective.
I asked for everyone's opinion. Just wish more would share it. I know You and themoose aren't the only two who have a definition of what they consider to be a porn star.

For me, it's simple. It doesn't matter how many credits they have or who they work for, or whether they work indy. How much money will they draw? If you were running your own studio, producing your own content etc, what names would be at the top of your list because you knew they would bring in the most money to your project? Not the girls that you want to work with because you're friends, or you think they're hot or anything else. What names will bring in the most cash? Those are stars.
I think everyone has their own definition. Broad stroke could even be a person who did an adult film and was the feature performer. A true porn "star" in my opinion is someone who really goes deep into it and doesn't just phone it in. Tory Lane, Ava Devine are a couple that come to mind.
Well I agree it is all in the eye of the beholder.
Like for me.... I kind of agree with what has been said already. But how about a up and comer who has done 10 films and is winning awards.... is she now a star?? Now I am not talking the "new comer" award. But lets say each one of those films is winning awards for her scences? It could be a strong argument that she is a start.
Now I agree that there are major stars... Like Asa Akira, Jenna Jameson, Jenna Haze, Crissy Mack, Bonnie Rotten, Kagyny Lin Carter, Rachel Star, Lisa Ann, etc.
But I am also thinking that the "Mega" stars of the 80's or what we thought of as stars is going away with the internet. Because of the fact that they don't need the huge studio's anymore. They just need a cam and a site.... and BOOOM! They take off.

As others have said, it's very subjective. There are mainstream "stars" that I think suck, and others that are in a lot of films and I think are very good actors/actresses but aren't considered "stars". I think the same goes for porn.
For me, it's a combination of being in a number of available films (not just one or two, or some web content), being sought after to do work (which leads to more films), and being sought after by major players/studios - for example if other "stars" seek these people out to work with for web content that would also give them "star" status even though the content isn't for a studio release. And, finally, performance - the woman who just lays there and moans isn't a star. The woman who exudes sexiness, gets up into the action, and can actually, well, act, is more likely to be considered a star in my book
If the girl has one or more videos that I can pop in the DVD player and put on while fucking my wife, so my wife has no idea I have actually fucked this girl in real life, thus, although my dick is in my wife, my mind is back with the girl on the television and it is really her, not my wife, who I am pumping the living daylights out of in my bedroom, then she is a pornstar to me....
IMHO it is basically a live number credit list and longevity in the industry! Using that criteria porn star definition could include, without question, Julia ann, Ginger Lynn, Amber Lynn Holly body yes even Jenna Jameson and definitely India summer! So many of the girls over the years, and although in less than 18 months and then their other girls that are strikingly beautiful but never really make a mark on the industry and other girls do! One girl that would qualify in this category. To me, would be crystal gold, she was unquestionably a beautiful woman with large credit list, however she never put a stamp on the history the way she might have had.
