Porn Stars

Re: Thousands, but very few STARS!

This has bothered me for some time.  Back in the 80s when I first started watching porn, there were stars: Amber Lynn, Ginger Lynn, Erica Boyer, Raquel Darrian, Nikki Dial, and even Traci Lords (whose films are now unavailable because she was underage at the time).  These women were stars not because they were beautiful (they all were) but because they exuded something on screen that went far beyond the moaning, groaning, sucking and fucking.

Also, in those days, most films had plots - they weren't just compilations of scenes as most films are today.  Sure, there are a few companies doing movies with plots, and those are often excellent films and award winners but the majority of films now are compilations.  And all you see of the female actresses is them moaning, groaning, sucking and fucking.  You don't see them act... ok, you do, since the sex is acting (you don't think it's real do you?  Listen to Evan Stone some time talk about what it's like to be a male porn star), You don't get to see them do a scene, or say lines, except for a few lines here and there that last about 30 seconds and doesn't consist of anything more than something like "Oh, you're alone in the house?  Let's fuck."

And there were far fewer films coming out each year than there are now.  And fewer women heading to La-La Land hoping to make it big in porn.  Porn wasn't acceptable and no one (or very few) wanted their wife or daughter or sister or cousin involved... and those that were involved mostly hid it from their family.

Then came Jenna Jameson.  And porn hit the big time and became "acceptable" and started to go mainstream a bit... and turned into a billion dollar industry.  Now, every Terri, Deb, and Helen has a webcam and can film "amateur videos" and call themselves porn stars.  Women with no skills and no talent figure they can make a quick buck doing something they enjoy - sucking dick and fucking so they head to the porn studios, or buy a web cam, or digital camera (which are so very, very, cheap now compared to what decent cameras cost in the 80s).  They don't act, they don't do "scenes" where they have to say lines, they just strip and fuck.

And, let's be honest, how many different ways can you watch people fuck?  I mean take any scene whatsoever - maybe one you saw last night.  You can take the woman in that scene and replace her with any other female, and you wouldn't know the difference.  In fact, if you compared two scenes you'd find they are so very similar - the same positions, the same actions, the same moaning and groaning, and dirty talk... the women are practically indistinguishable and so are the scenes.

There are very, very, very, few women these days who are truly porn *stars*, imo.  My two favorites: Joanna Angel and Sunny Lane.  They have their own production companies, they write and produce their own films, and their films usually have a half-way decent plot (for a porn film) and you can see people actually *act* in them.  Neither woman is exceptionally beautiful in the way Amber Lynn, Ginger Lynn, or the others mentioned above were in their day but they are still attractive.  They do more than strip and fuck.  And they have a certain presence on camera (and off) that is hard to describe.  If you don't believe me about presence and acting ability, go see Joanna Angel feature at a strip club.  Of all the women I've seen at clubs, she's still the best performer ever.  And Sunny Lane just has... something (and I don't know what it is) about her that exudes sex even when she's just standing and posing for pictures at a show.   They are stars.  There are a few others here and there but the majority of the "stars" in porn these days aren't stars... they're barely actresses.

Or maybe I'm just a grumpy old man who has seen everything in porn that he's ever likely to see and am too jaded to comment further.

Commence your ripping my comments apart... :-)

Putting aside that the number probably changes hourly I started wondering this while on the Freeones site. They rank the actresses and I've seen numbers as high as the 1300s.  Realizing that their ranking probably doesn't 'represent every adult actress in the biz it still made me wonder.

There's a lot of guessing but little hard data about how many actors in Hollywood make a living exclusively from film and television  (as opposed to waiting tables as well).  I've seen numbers anywhere from 3,000 to 21,000 people who draw salaries entirely from acting.  I imagine the numbers are even harder to come by for adult production.

So when we talk about not paying for porn, or about changes in the industry such as condom laws and who they affect, or about movement from porn to mainstream, how many people are we talking about?

It seems like every girl that did even a single scene that got published on the net, forget about video, will bill themselves as a pornstar.  Unless you have seen some professional vids of her by a well-known producer, I would not consider her a 'pornstar'.

You're right, most porn produced now is plot free get naked and screw scenes. I disagree with you when you say that today's girls aren't as pretty as a Ginger Lynn was back in her day. I think that the mainstreaming of porn has opened up the universe of beautiful women that will consider doing it. Very few will ever be Jenna Jamison level stars, but the quality of the girls is definitely higher IMHO.

As everyone here knows I watch girl-girl porn almost exclusively.  My preference is not for any kind of plot--I really don't care--I just want the women to be good looking and into what they're doing. That's why I like Nubile Films, Viv Thomas, Met Art and similar brands.  But anything with Ryan Ryans, August Ames, Bret Rossi, Dani Daniels or Eva Lovia getting it on with another lady is usually worth a look. For me those ladies and a handful of their peers do have that special somethi g that leaps out of the screen at you and that distinguishes them from everyone else.  Even Molly Cavalli can be fun to watch because I think she genuinely likes eating pussy.   As for whether any of these people call themselves stars I just couldn't care less. As long as when the cameras are rolling they make me believe they're having fun.

As for the production quality I agree there's a lot of crap out there. Even a scene with two hot women can be ruined by histrionics,  bad lighting and shot composition, and yes extreme closeups  (while I think pussies are beautiful if I  can't see the entirety of the two women having sex with each other I feel as though I'm watching  dissociated body parts ).  And for all the  Ginger Lynns and her ilk from back in the day let's be honest, there was an awful lot of dreck back then too. For me it was painful watching some of these women trying to "act" and many of them were simply clueless.  And good girl girl scenes were rare--with the exception of Ginger, Ashlyn Gere and a couple of others most of the porn actresses back then ate pussy almost begrudgingly and mostly it was desultory.  It wasn't until later generations such as Celeste, Jenteal (2 of the most naturally beautiful women ever to make porn imho), Jill Kelly and Dyanna Lauren that girl girl (along with some other specialties ) took off. Those women were seriously hot compares to their forebears but I still had no interested in watching them do dialogue--I was perfectly happy watching Celeste tap Nikki Tyler with a strap on vs. watching them talk.

As with anything the ease with which one can enter the market has made for a lot of detritus available and may have made it less worthwhile to invest the time necessary to find and groom people worth watching.  But as long as there are a few diamonds to be found in the thousands of porn scenes available in a few keystrokes I suppose I can live with it.  As they say de gustibus non est disputandum.

I think one reason there wasn't so much girl-on-girl action in the 80s and early 90s is because of public hair.  It wasn't until women started shaving their pussies that the girl-on-girl action in porn started getting better.  Until bald pussies, women just didn't want to put their faces down there because of the smell... imo.

Personally, I don't like girl-on-girl and will fast forward through those scenes.  To each their own.

I have to agree with you that a lot of the gonzo stuff looks very mechanical and the stars often look fairly bored, and the fake groaning is over the top and pretty ridiculous.  It's pretty rare where the two "stars" look like they really want to fuck the other these days.

Don't think that the Bureau of Labor Statistics has a category for pornstars.

Who makes money in Porn?   DVD sales are done and the amount of "free" porn available is staggering.  I always chuckle when people talk about it as an "industry" maybe during the 90's and early 2000's but now, just a shell of its self.

The performers today have switched to escorting or cam sites or all of the above to make ends meet.

And as far as "stars" well that is subjective and one could claim that any performer who has a viable site or cam is now a star.

Just my two cents.
