I am one of the few willing to stand up and be counted, but until a LOT more of us come out of the shadows, no politician is going to lead the charge when it appears that no one will want to follow. Gay marriage is not legal everywhere yet. Only reason it is legal is because gays have judges that do their bidding, overturning laws in the majority of the states where the people do not want to redefine marriage and ignoring the 10th Amendment. If the hobbyists could embed judges sympathetic to their plight the way the gays did, and not worry about the will of the people. the 1 to 2 percent that hobby could sue states that do not allow legalized prostitution and get a judge to legislate from the bench for them as did the 1 to 2 percent that are gay did.
Most of the lawmakers, both at State and National level are old white men! Mostly Republican conservatives who use their freaking religion. They think they have the right to chose and dictate how people live and it covers as you said legalization of the world's oldest profession, gay marriage and even when it comes to women's reproductive rights in the country. Gay marriage issue is more politics as they form a significant voting block.
