If your plan (and your budget) is to see porn stars on a regular basis, then getting established with agencies is the more profitable investment in the long run. This for the simple reason that agency decrease over time your search and transactions cost. In short, they do the work for you.

If your plan instead is to see porn stars depending on when the budget become available, then its better to invest your time and resources on going directly. At the beginning there may be a little hassle on establishing yourself through direct networking, but once you tap into that networks you should be able to move easily when the 'cash' and the 'interest' give you the push.

Some do both if necessary and the financial funds are available.

My other advice would be, if you have long term plans, to get established with multiple agencies, since they have different business models, price points, and talent turn over. You do NOT want to get stuck with an agency that may get out of business, that cannot reach the talent your are interested in seeking, or that their scheduling may conflict with your requirements. Some agencies tour a lot, others have mainly talent available in specific locations.

A simple distinction between long term and short terms plans will help you to set up the rest.

Your best bet is to work with an agency.  First of all, there are many porn stars who will not see someone who hasn't been vetted.  There are too many lunatics out there.  An agency has the resources to check you out, make sure you're on the up-and-up, not a time waster or whatever.  Once you've seen a few ladies from an agency, and have a reputation, then it will be easier to book direct.  

That's not to say that there aren't porn stars who will book you direct - there are.  But, working with an agency has many advantages.  The better agencies (like TLC) will find out who is a good fit for you and will steer you away from women who might not show you the kind of time you want.  Reviews only go so far in giving you that kind of information and, if there's no review of the person you want to see, there's no help for you except from the agency.

Yes, working with agencies is more expensive than booking direct.  But, IMHO it's well worth it.  If you book direct, and something happens and the girl doesn't show up (she flakes, has an accident, gets sick or whatever)  you're left there with your dick in your hand.  But, if you work with an agency, the agency will let you know if there's a problem and might even be able to find a suitable substitute.  

So, to sum up, working with an agency will give both you and the girl some safety in knowing each other is safe and that you're at least partially compatible, and that way you're more likely to have a good time
