There's a close or distant clue below, depending on audience perception.

I'll  give more than I take but not so much to empty me .

When I hear a bad joke or an imagined threat I'll reply, Don't try to Rather me.

You said that irony was the shackles of youth.

Hint:  Ripped from the headlines, sort of.

Before you go and Google this, let others have a chance to see if they can noodle it out.

I'm sure there's a brain cell up there that's got a link to the answer, but even threatening to poke it with Q-tip hasn't helped.

Right church so to speak, but the wrong pew.

I didn't want to spoil it for you.

I was thinking of a  phrase sometimes used when a cat falls off a roof and harms a young lad who's mean to cats ?
Do I seem to be closer now ?

I had to google mrfisher's quote but I also see quadseasonal's hint -- at least I think I do.  I never heard the expression "Don't try to Rather me." before.

But what do noodles have to do with it?

(Ding!)  Oh!  Laundry's done!  Now I have to do some irony

Don't try to Rather me, Surely you jest, same meaning  to those who doubt some of
Rather's tales.

"The song's title refers to an incident in New York City in 1986, when two then-unknown assailants attacked journalist Dan Rather, while repeating "Kenneth, what is the frequency?" This is explained in the liner notes...

"What's the frequency, Kenneth?" is your Benzedrine
I was brain-dead, locked out, numb, not up to speed
I thought I’d pegged you an idiot's dream
Tunnel vision from the outsider’s screen
 I never understood the frequency
You wore our expectations like an armored suit

I'd studied your cartoons, radio, music, TV, movies, magazines
Richard said, "Withdrawal in disgust is not the same as apathy"
A smile like the cartoon, tooth for a tooth
You said that irony was the shackles of youth
You wore a shirt of violent green
 I never understood the frequency

"What's the frequency, Kenneth?" is your Benzedrine
Butterfly decal, rear-view mirror, dogging the scene
You smile like the cartoon, tooth for a tooth
You said that irony was the shackles of youth

You wore a shirt of violent green
 I never understood the frequency
You wore our expectations like an armored suit
 I couldn't understand
You said that irony was the shackles of youth
 I couldn't understand
You wore a shirt of violent green
 I couldn't understand
I never understood, don't fuck with me"
