will be in town for the mayweather fight how is the grand downtown. rooms have absolutely priced out of control for that weekend. also kentucky derby day. any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.... thanks a lot

The motel 6 is $400 a night that weekend. Good luck hunny. Have tons of fun.
Try using hotwire. I've found some excellent deals in the past. Use the approval tab for 90-100 percent satisfaction and you won't go wrong. Or try a hotel without a casino for a lesser rate...

not bad pricing for fight weekend! $339 pn.. 3 night minimum stay of course
Its a very nice hotel I like it a lot - definitely my downtown fav. Has a great retro feel.. very dicreet access to elevators.. I always love that! 
Rooms are good size, very nice. (in main hotel ,I havent stayed in the tower) Good onsite bars, food.nStaff friendly, great service Close enough to fremont without being on it and its away from the noise.
By comparison:
A quick scan of priceline (whom I use for advanced bookings) shows theres nothing less than $300pn that weekend.. and those are the roach motels on the edge of town.
Even stratosphere and circus circus are mid-high 300's...and they are bottom of the barrel strip hotels.
If you want something decent expect 500..
If you can get Grand for 339 Id say you hit the jackpot
its gone up to 409..
Not sure if the North Strip works for you but hotwire has two begining at $270 and the second is $310 (normally $931. Both have a 95% recommend rating and both are 5 stars. Both are mystery hotels so you won't know what the hotel is until you book it. It's probably the Palazzo, Wynn or Encore. I use hotwire all the time. Have fun.

HOtel Tonight is an awesome app - but only works within the week - definitey great savings there for sure, I use it ll the time.
