Viagra - for Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH)

There have been any number of posts about Viagra and the generic sildenafil version, so I may have missed a discussion about it being prescribed to treat PAH.  PAH is a condition when the blood pressure in your lungs is too high, and your heart has to work hard to pump blood into your lungs.  Sildenafil is being prescribed to help alleviate the worsening of the condition. The recommended dosage is the 20mg tablet 3 times a day.  A 30 day supply is 90 pills. So what, right? Here's the so-what part: when prescribed for pulmonary arterial hypertension a 90 day supply costs $90.  That seems extremely reasonable to me.

My HMO doctor prescribed 20 mg sildenafil tablets for me (not for PAH!). My co-pay for 40 pills is $40. As an aside, Viagra/sildenafil was first investigated to treat PAH. In the clinical tests, the guys discovered the "side effect" and the rest is history!
