I've had guys really do a number on me with shaven hair growing out. For me the day before or just trim it please!

I have always made sure to shave all they way down below. When is a good time to take care of this before I go on a date? I use just a basic shaving gel and shaver. Thank you for your responses.

I would advise against shaving same day in case you nick yourself. Cuts on your genitals make transfer of STIs easiest. Same reason you shouldn't brush your teeth right before giving oral as the toothbrush bristles can create small cuts in the mouth. Shave a few days ahead of time. Trimming very low works as well, just as long as it isn't a jungle.

I'm sure ladies have had the same experience as me working around stubble.  You get blown into orbit that first time you gargle with Listerine!

I'd much rather have someone who is trimmed up nicely than see someone with inflamed, red, angry skin/ingrown hairs. Unless you like to keep your pubic hair non-existent, just use a beard trimmer/body hair trimmer before your appointment.

Pubic hair actually serves a purpose; it's a protectant. the skin in that area is very delicate, and shaving to the skin opens up a warm, wet, dark area to the potential of all sorts of bacterial infection, particularly if you don't care for the skin properly after you've shaved.

If you prefer to be bald, i'd recommend a product like TendSkin to help with ingrown hairs, as well as exfoliating the area on at least an every-third-day basis. this will keep your hair follicles/pores dirt and skin cell-free, and help prevent ingrown hairs.
