we're working on a draft proposal to be sent to the standards committee next monday ... check back in 2 weeks and we'll let you know what the final definition is ... J/K (just kidding)  ;-)

see, here's the deal. folks on this board have spent many 100s of Kbytes of discussion space on this topic and while a complete and thorough concensus has not yet emerged, one thing is for sure ... we know what/who ISN'T a pornstar!  :-)

now as TJ and Mathesar have already indicated one must really give up the word STAR to begin with (even in Hollywood it's not clear what "star" means) ... i'll even go further, let's not even bother with STARLET which has equally vague and troublesome connotations that go with it

so let's stick with ACTRESS ... once you agree on this, then you must concede that to be an "actress" you must be recognized according to the standards of the industry. in porn per se, that means you  probably work out of LA (almost a must), somehow or another you went through the World Modeling Agency (not modeling modeling, but modeling modeling, if you know what i mean ;-)  or in someway or another worked your way up thru the rank and file of that "community" ... and/or worked with established companies like West Coast Video (and their ilk) or even high-end ones like Elegant Angel, Wicked, Vivid and so on ... no matter what other circumstanes there are, if you have actually worked with one of these companies then ... dagnabbit! ... you just may be a porn ACTRESS!  ;-)

now ultimately what ACTRESS means is that you should have been IN a video/DVD title (maybe not on the cover necessarily, but appeared in and listed, maybe even not listed but appeared in, although that might be stretchcing it a bit). now this title has to be something that can be grabbed off the shelf in a store (not pure digital content on a website, we're talking about a *physical* product here, something that can be shipped to you from a warehouse say) ... an alternative definition (although related) is that your screen name shows up in one of the many adult video databases like www.iafd.com and so on

so by all the above, i'm afraid no matter how popular you are and how huge your internet fan base is, you're better off calling yourself an adult entertainment (or porn) MODEL than "pornstar" (which would frankly be a bit pretentious and would put some people off)

JMHO  ... and hope this helps ... oh yes, FIGHT THE POWER!  ;-)

----

[DISCLAIMER] ... i should add that i'm very, how shall we say, "chemically-altered" right now, so if none of this stuff  makes any sense, you'll excuse me i'm sure!  ;-)

Do you consider web porn stars (someone who has never actually been in a movie but has a high profile web site) porn stars?  Or would they just be models?

Lily, your site has not been reviewed by TER so it can not link to it. If you would like help getting your site reviewed for free, just let me know and I will send you the instructions. You can post replies and even threads without your link. You are only required to have a link at the bottom of your posts if you are placing an ad.

To be a considered a porn star (IMHO) you must have appeared in enough mainstream porn movies to be known as a household name.  It's the word "Star" that is the key.  Having a personal website with webcam, being a model for a website or being in a couple of amateur flicks doesn't qualify as "star" status... you're simply just another "Porn actress".

I guess we clients see the "Porn Star" the same as a film star.  Just because you appeared as an extra in 2 - 3 major motion pictures, would america think of you as a film star?  I would doubt it.  Then again, others may disagree.

I don't think that ANY porn star's a household name.  Michael Jordan, George Bush and Madonna are household names, not porn stars...maybe Jenna Jameson, but I wouldn't even consider her to be.

so does that mean the motivation (or motive)  behind pornstars taking celebrity-like names (Dru Berrymore, etc) is to propel themselves into a higher "orbit" of stardom ?

so their names will stick on folks lips, as it were?  LOL

I really couldn't say.  If I was an unknown in the porn industry and I wanted to become a known, this could be a very good idea to motify an establised celebrity's name into a porn name.  It would help.  I've got no idea as to what the motivation behind this is.  I would honestly say that it would work.  It's memorable.  It's catchy.  Who know's, but I can honestly say as well that porn stars aren't household names.  I would strongly say that most people today can't name one porn star when looking at all living generations.  Even when considering Jenna Jameson.

I guess I didn't mean the normal "household"... I meant a household name to those of us who watch porn on a regular basis.

Porn Star Mall (Excalibur Films). See link below.

Have you ever done an analysis of the ladies defined as "porn actresses" on TER?  Similar to the fabulous service you do for those of us based in LA?  (See THE MATHESAR REPORT -- 07/30/2003  on the LA board.) It would be a huge help to those of us who partake of this sector.

Just because you may have dona a web film or some web modeling IMHO does not give you the title porn star

like singleton said you need to earn that title by being reconized in La or by major film makers or major magazines

I think porn entertainer is a good way to go when i am looking for a porn star for a provider i want to see film and magazine creditd by well know agencys
