END OF MESSAGE

i'm looking for software or a website that would tabulate  daily where my visitors are coming (referrer url) and their city state. preferably free but i'm willing to spend a little.  i  have a low/medium traffic site with about 10,000 visitors a month, if that matters.  i am toying with the idea of doing a free/reduced trial with cityvibe or exotics and just  want to  get an idea where my advertising dollars or efforts are best spent. thanks. :)

I use addfreestats. They've been reliable and vastly informative. Not sure they'll tell you the state your visiters are from, but pretty much everything else. It'll tell you what sites your visitors were last at before visiting you, and whooooo! it's free.

Almost all web hosters will provide info regarding last referral url, browser used etc as part of the package (ie free) but not aware of any that can give you the breakdown of visitors ip address.  A lot of ip addresses are hidden anyway so I'm not sure how useful this info would be.

by yahoo small biz. the tracking is very basic.  i also have a free javascript tracker that shows me the last 20 urls and ips.  but not a daily total. ie 70 from eros 20 cityvibe.  91 Ter for today.  i'd pay for that and *city* + country to see the number of relevant hits places like c69 were sending me if/when if i travel.

at some point i had a couple trackers to get the job done but having tons of  javascript can lower a pages rank in search engines a lot. so prefer not to do that.

The Yahoo small biz package includes Web Expert Lite for free.  It will give you referring URLS over whatever period you like.  If you want daily figures, simply set the access log to daily.

If you pay for the full Web Expert package you'll get a report that also has IP's and country of origin where possible.

My website has something added to it called "Traffic Facts" and it breaks down all activity including how many hits per day, week, month. The IP's of the most active visitors, how long they spent on each page, which pages they visited, what operating systems they use, a breakdown by state and country, etc... it's a very detailed report.  (BTW there is someone in Akron, OH who viewed 455 pages on my site in one day.)

There is also a "Referring Domain" section which tells how many referrals from each website and what percent they represent of all hits.  For example what percentage found my website via TER or google or yahoo, etc.

My web hosting company charges $2.99 a month for all these statistics.  What a deal!

And lastly here is a very interesting site where you can check your web ranking: http://www.alexa.com/#

I would recommend Awstats. It's a free program to download, or you can find a hosting company that offers it. It has a lot of great website statistics on it, including referring sites and search engines, files viewed, search engine keywords, and IP logs. You can view a working example here: http://awstats.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/awstats.pl

.. after I read through both websites and downloaded the software from both, I can't get either one to to give me sufficient instructions/accurate html to allow me to add them to my website.

I'm not exactly a power website genius, but I designed a good part of my website, know how to edit it, etc.

What to do, OH! what to do?

Suzanne,

It looks as though this is a program you'd have to take up with your hosting company and not your web designer (although these could be one and the same). Glancing over the documentation for the program, it's a program that would be installed on the server itself, if I'm not mistaken. When I posted that it was a free d/l, I'd not looked over all the information on it, and I apologize.

I'd suggest either asking your hosting company about it or finding a hosting company that offers Awstats. If you need a recommendation for such, feel free to email me at [email protected]

there is nothing to download. it just gives you the html that you insert in your page. they do give you the option to put a counter on your page, but you don't have to so it can be invisible. it does city, state, country, IP, company name if they are at work is a business, referring site (whatever page they clicked on to get to you), etc. there is also a neat graph that shows daily hits since you installed the code.

it's free for a log size of 100, which is pretty good. that means they only track 100 at a time, so older ones get bumped off. you can pay for a larger log. it is not expensive at all.

i really like it.

Here is a free one that will exactly as you wish..

Sign up and then place the code at the bottom. You want the little box to be unobtrsively down there anyway, but this keeps the js at the bottom of the  page so as not to harm your SE placement.

Herndon, VA, home to AOL.  Any web access through AOL uses their proxy servers so the IP Address of the request always comes from Herndon, VA.

I remember when someone who put a log analyzer on their was truely convinced that most of their users came from Herndon, VA and was determined to find out why many people from there were interested in their product.  When I explained to them about AOL, a lightbulb lit up in their head!
