Pet Peeve of the week...

Ok maybe not of the week but of the moment. ;)

During my tenure as a hooker I tried very hard to be not only efficient but courteous when responding to e-mail inquires. It's common decency right? Now, I know there are a lot of ladies out there that get a barrage of e-mails on a daily & weekly basis and responding to that volume of mail has become an art form. To those ladies, I applaud you.

But, what about those who are just sarcastic and rude? Here is the deal. Some of you know I own my own design business. I sent out an e-mail recently to some ladies who either had free web sites (geo cities, freewebs ect.) or had no web presence at all outside of ads. I do this once a year.

There is this person (I just can't call her a lady) who in her infinite charm and gentility responded to my e-mail with such disdain and sarcasm that all I could think was, wow do you actually work in this industry? She was on vacation.  I know this because the e-mail was originally met with a yahoo auto response. So what chip in her brain caused her to act like a shit in an e-mail while on vacation? This is the kind of question that I think of when I am changing my cat’s little box. Fitting I think. But I digress…..

Here are my thoughts, take them for what they are worth..

Ladies, if you get a solicitation in an e-mail for something you are not interested in...delete it. It is one click away. It's really easy and will save you so much hassle. All it takes is one e-mail, spread back channel to do a woman's business a lot of harm. I didn't do this, but I have seen it happen. It is not pretty.

If and only if you feel the need to respond, do it in a manner in which no one can ever read any sarcasm or contempt into it, unless of course you really don't give a shit and that is what you are trying to convey to the recipient.

I got a lot of solicitation e-mails while I worked, a lot of them from web designers, and I built and maintained my own site. I just deleted them and asked to be taken off the mailing list. Short, sweet and to the point. And it left me open to being called a sarcastic, rude bitch when I deserved it. :)

You would not believe the "stuff" I have seen e-mail do.... It's almost like it is alive....   and damage -  yup, collateral and direct - it's all there....   and lots of it too....

Everyone, please, when sending e-mail - think of the worst possible way that it can be interpreted - cause guess what, those lil'll 'lectrons are all on their own once you hit that send button... and there is no telling what they will say about you.....

My pet peeve of the week is gentleman who get to my incall and want to discuss my rates... Shouldn't you know this before arriving and there is no need to discuss?

I won't talk money. I will arrive with a white envelope and place it in plain site. We will say hello, and I will demand that you disrobe ASAP. LOL

I'm suprised that the recipient bothered to respond.  I get dozens of spam emails each week from web service providers, malls etc.  Those that slip past my spam filter I just delete.  Occasionally there will be one that is so astonishingly stupid that I'm tempted to reply, but usually can't be bothered.

Are you sure that there isn't something in your email itself that triggered her response?  eg:  You're promoting web design services and she clicks on the link only to find it leads to the wrong page or, worse still, she's mousetrapped?  Are the pages you use to promote your business full of spelling and grammatical errors or dead links? Is your content badly written? Believe me, it happens, a lot.

and I understand what you are saying. According to spell-check the grammar is correct. The links all work and there is no spy-ware or pop ups associated with any of my sites.

The tone of her e-mail indicated that she didn't look at the links she just decided to work her charm in the e-mail.

And the post below is a prefect example of the attitude so prevalent lately. I am who I am and don't bother me unless I invite you. It's like I said. I send out a mass e-mail 1 time a year. It is not like I am soliciting for Cialis sales or kiddie porn.

I think the saying goes "It is better to say nothing and thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt...." This applies to so many in this industry.

Thank you Emma for your input, it is always appreciated.

My pet peeve of the week is people who think it's ok to use my email for their own personal, free marketing tool. I pay for my web presence and email, and I don't do it so that people can fill my in-box with crap. It makes no difference if the solicited people are on free web space...I think it's rude and inconsiderate to assume that it's ok to market your busiess on someone else's dime or time.

When you pay for my email, feel free to use it as a tool to build your business.
