Screwed up my phone really bad: suggestions, please

My phone is (was) a pay-as-you-go phone.  No monthly schedule, just add time as needed and before the current time expires.

I had been traveling for a while and got back home and had to catch up on missed business. Yet, I was positive that I had plenty of time to refill. I bought a card and my phone wouldn't work. I got through to tech support and found out that I had missed the expiration by two days. (Time expired on Day 1, I tried to refill on Day 3.) I asked about the grace period and they told me there is zero grace period on pay-as-you-go and that number had already been re-assigned to someone else. I was almost tempted to call "my" old number and ask them if I could have it back!

My phone still has my phonebook with almost 10 years and hundreds of contacts but, when I get a new phone and NEW NUMBER, no one will recognize my number. I can, at best, try to fix things up one meeting at a time, but ... I don't know. I feel like an idiot.

Any suggestions?
Or words of consolation?
Or a warning to other newbies: Keep track of your pre-paids!!

Thanks

Call your old number to see if it really has been reassigned. Usually, numbers aren't reassigned for at least 60 days; or at least, that's the way it used to be.  :-)

If it is active, then I'm afraid there's not too much you can do.  I've been told repeatedly, by different companies, that prepaid account phone numbers are assigned completely at random.

However, if you get a "disconnected number" message (indicating that it has NOT been reassigned), then you can call back to speak with another customer rep.  If that person is equally unable to help, ask for a supervisor.  Or hang up and call back  until you get someone who can/will help you.

After a few attempts, though, I'd recommend giving up and calling another prepaid phone provider.  Don't spend any money with them until they assure you they can and will give you your old number.  :-)

and they were flexible with the end date.

I'm now with Tracfone and their plan is longer than 90 days, closer to 150 days. Since I only use the phone for hobbying, I never use all the minutes/texts.

I usually contact providers through email. The providers I have seen since the number changed have not had a problem with me having a new phone number.

that I'd never use anyway.  TrakFone But I plugged in a new minutes card & was accepted.
