On a few occasions, I have opened a post that ended with eom on the subject line, only to find content in the message section such as a photo or a link to something else.
I think there are some people who don't know what eom means and place it there because they think it looks neat.
Were they perhaps responses to the EOM post or actually the first EOM post? If the latter then, yeah, someone don't know what that means.
A while back I tried to put a humorous bit in the body along the lines of "Why are you reading this? The -eom- means everything said is in the subject line" I forget if I clicked the clear rather than post button of it one of the moderators though it was too out of line (didn't get a rejected message so probably me hitting the wrong button).
The moderators would not pull that post for being out of line and there have been many posts like that in the past.
If the only thing in the body is a link, one can follow the link by clicking the symbol in the subject line, so the eom is appropriate. If there's a pic in the body with eom in subject, yeah that's weird.
Just saying.
That habit continues today, the reason I do it is that the post changes color once opened and my own posts stick out so I can immediately tell if someone has replied to one of my posts.
The reason I did it when a mod was to check and see if there was anything hidden in those EOM posts that might be verboten. Now it's just a habit.
This subject comes up a couple of times a year. I said to automatically append the character count to the subject line. We already get the date, time and reads:
Silly Award Suggestion - by Jensen36363, 3/8/2017 9:09:21 PM (15 reads)
The software already counts characters in posts (there's a limit), so put the final count on the line:
Silly Award Suggestion - by Jensen36363, 3/8/2017 9:09:21 PM (15 reads) (380 characters)
A "quoted" but empty reply would have around 380 characters. A real empty post would have (0 characters). A reply with a lot of content (like I tend to do 
would have a bigger CC (669 characters). And if you saw that someone had written an encyclopedia entry (4321 characters), you might want to skip that one, as well.

There is currently an automatically appended indicator (a blue piece of link chain) to indicate that the post contains a "Related link". They also need to add an icon to indicate whether or not there is a link to a picture file. On the ad boards, I almost never want to open ads w/o pics but there is no way to tell until after the fact.

Has TER ever considered running an analysis of the number of times a member opens a post/response that is marked in the Subject as not having any comment in the body. All those EOM, -eom-, -e- and even the rare End of Message posts?
I'm sure I'd show up on it but always have to laugh at myself as soon as I see the blank post (or sometimes a quoted statement but nothing added).

1) It turns the post red, and when I come back to a thread later I can tell at a glance if there are new posts since I last checked. (The new posts won't be red)
2) Some people purposely hide messages in posts that say EOM. (I have done that myself) They are not always mistakes as mrf implied. It might be a joke. It might be a secret message to people who open eom posts.
3) If you want to "like" a post you have to open it.
4) you might want to check a person's reviews, and opening a post allows you to click on their reviews. That goes for a provider or hobbyist. If it's a provider's post, then it allows you to go further. For example you click on the link to her reviews and from there you can go to her ads and websites. (Provided her reviews are linked to her username, -- but you won't even know that if you don't click on the post)
5) Some people really seem to get irritated that others open EOM posts, so I will continue doing my part to keep them irritated.
