If you think your safe, try again... It depends a lot on what OS you are using and if your SO had administrator rights. Staying safe is becoming more informed then most have to time to do with what you need to know about security setting, profiles, passwords, encryption software, et.

Now for the keylogger, it is not the cause for losing the information you mentioned. But, it could have been someone else or inadvertently you that cleared history and cached data.

Keyloggers come in many forms. The link I provided should be enough to let you know that it can be done without you knowing and there is very little you can do to find it.

I have my own PC which cannot be accessed by the SO. However, if someday she took it and brought it to someone who knows how to access data, good luck breaking the encryption key to the really personal stuff.

I realized years ago it wasn't safe to do things that could be used against you, but I elected to continue and have prepared myself for the unexpected with a list of stupid excuses for my behavior - LOL - like it really means anything....

So, if you can't explain yourself out of that paper bag, just look her straight in the face with a stupid stare and deny deny deny - what difference will it make as she has already figured out what you are up to and will take even more from you once you start confessing - good luck

My SO has been really odd the last few days.  And I noticed when i logged onto my computer that all the history in IE was gone and the windows programs listed on the start button were wiped clean.  I found this odd and then thought perhaps she had installed some sort of keylogging program or something to track my websurfing habits.  Is there a way to see if these programs are installed i know most run in secret in the background.  I have Spyware running and adaware as well as antivirus, but doubt they would pick up on this.  If anyone knows of a good program i could run on my system to see whats running, or how to check it in windows.  Thanks

In Win XP, you can hit ctrl-alt-delete and bring up Task Manager.  It will show you what applications are running, and more importantly, what processes are running.  A warning on the processes though:  many will mean nothing to you and have very cryptic names.  Do you know what PQV2iSvc.exe is?  I do, but face it most folks will have no idea.

Most will come up with program descriptions at the website liutilities (www.liutilities.com) that will tell you what the program is.

Sounds like most spy sofftware do not show up in Task Manager..
Try "Contorl + 7 (or other number)" to see if you can bring up its set up window.

Or simply reinstall the OS..

What a sobering experience!  Good luck finding a utility that detects spying programs.  One of the best protections against this is erasing your cache whenever you logoff TER; that is a recommendation that is made on Captain69 when you logoff their site.

I hope you aren't relying on XP and it's encryption to protect your stuff.  Although it is very strong encryption, it is only as secure as the password on the user account.  There are very simple utilities out there to reveal passwords - and once they have that, the encryption in Windows XP is useless.

No, PgP software works for me. And simple names and passwords are no longer - I carry a USB drive which has all my user names and passwords on it. I have a copy of this in a safe place.

While it is because I am slightly paranoid, it has somewhat simplified my managing secure documents and information. Over the years I have actually relaxed a little as I am not afraid of what others can’t find all that useful against me anyway.

However, it's a pretty crappy keylogging program that gives you a hint this big.

Privacy program's settings.  They are probably set to wipe out now and then.  If you've done any registry cleaning with things like Registry Mechanic or Fix-It utilities, it could cause this.    Something has either been programmed to wipe things out for your privacy, and you forgot about it, or something has made registry changes.  You might get Pest Patrol and have it run a check.

Everyone has a right to their privacy.  I live alone but if I had an SO and found out that they were fucking with my computer, there would be a boot up his ass.

Separate check books + separate credit cards + separate computers = stress free relationship

The play on words works on so many levels.

If you are on your computer, you leave tracks. If you are on the web you do not have privacy.  My advice would be to use a diferent computer at a different location and use.... or find a computer geek and treat him/her right and let them take care of your 'privacy concerns'. Or don't do anything that would embarass you (boring!).
