The only place I've ever had any sort of scare was on Facebook.

...and this was in my professional life, not in my hobby or social lives.  Facebook could "see" that a colleague had called me, and then connected the number to the person. Nope, not on my watch. I still have to go through every once in a while and block people that Facebook thinks "I might know".  I made sure to tell that person that they need to remove their phone number from Facebook.  They didn't even know Facebook had their phone number.

If you have an iPhone, you can turn off the connection sharing for social media apps.  That's personally what I do, but it's definitely not a guarantee.

A couple of clients have suggested I might want to use Twitter to announce my current schedule and availability; that sounded like a good idea, so I created an account yesterday.   I've got some time on my hands today so I want to start adding pics, filling out my profile, etc but don't know where to start!

I haven't done anything with it yet...... are there any things I should avoid putting on my profile?

Things that are very appealing in a Twitter feed?

Is this something that is mainly used to share pics and updates?

Honestly, I'm just completely clueless as to what I should or should not be doing with a Twitter account (so much so that there's probably lots of other questions I should be asking!), so any and all advice is much appreciated.

There is massive, uncontrollable cross-talk between all social media, google, and every other activity on your computer.

The "real" you buys a birthday present for your 10 yo nephew on Amazon and the next thing you know he's a "friend" of DebbieNooner and getting all your updates.

Log in to your "real" facebook on a friend's computer and the tentacles spread further and further.

Facebook, Twitter, Google+ ... EVIL INCARNATE

but it can ensnare your clients too.  Imagine your wife getting an invite from an escort!

The fast lane to hell is labeled:  Social Media.

TER is all the social media any of us should ever need this side of the hobby divide

The technology has so far run ahead of so many peoples attempts to control it, it verges on the criminal.

I find social media to be very good for some things but very bad for most things.

It has created numerous problems for many, many people I know and I avoid it unless it is an absolute necessity for work related stuff.

Is this why I frequently get LinkedIn requests in my mailbox, both from clients I've met and those I haven't??

I'd just figured their email got hacked.  Now I wonder if it's just standard operating procedure for LinkedIn to contact everyone in the same email account's address book.

And now that you mention it.... when I signed up, there was a list of other Twitter users for me to add; the list included clients with their children in their profile photos!
Is this because they're using the same email account for hobbying as they use for their personal Twitter account?

wow.  OK.  Social media is a scary, scary thing.  Yikes.

I mainly use twitter to connect with other hookers, be political, and other things. When i did phone sex, I used it as a marketing tool, and a lot of those people still follow me.  Of course i use it as a marketing tool too, but I don't really get too many clients via Twitter.  It's not what keeps me there.

The clients i have garnered via Twitter all tell me the same thing, though.  My Twitter feed helped them in making the decision to see me. I've spoken with clients about Twitter, and some use it quite regularly when looking for a new provider to see.

Everything has pros and cons.

If you're aware of the dangers/risks involved with carrying on with social media, that's great.  In my experience, Facebook is the worst concerning privacy matters

NO! I am not a computer expert but it is NOT by their choice or even accidentally using the wrong account.

A trail of cookies, hyperlinks, cross-references, viewing histories and every other invasive tool available creates an unbreakable web of connectivity.  Use two email addresses?  They become connected on social media, somehow.

What is Facebook's stated goal?  To connect everyone?  Yeah, even if they don't want to be connected!

If you have two separate computers, you might be able to keep things totally separate but I wouldn't be surprised if the Social Media sites start making "connections" via ISP identifiers, network IDs and traffic patterns

So one day my paranoia went up big time. I had this fear of being hacked. I started "cleaning" up my computer and slew of other things in an attempt to erase my digital past just so that if I'm ever hacked I minimize my risks. Knowing what I know now, that wasn't going to safeguard me, but I'm still glad I took my paranoia seriously because now the adult industry is being hacked and I've gotten some risky things out of the way.

To why Impposter's post rings loudly with me... In the process of cleaning up my computer, I discovered "Zombie Cookies" aka "Ever Cookies" on my computer. I'm talking cookies from back when I was researching the industry 0_0     I tried everything to get them off and had no luck! Those babies came right back once I deleted them. At the time, there was no good advice on google, but I was playing around with the Tor Browser at that time and it was there on that side of the internet that I found a guide to successfully removing them. Everyone should google those terms (Zombie & Ever cookie) and check your computer to see if you have any of these cookies. It was extremely scary!!!

Since then, I've set up my browser to reject cookies and I use 2 computer cleaners that erase any browser history when I close it. They are "Cookie" by SweetP Productions and "C-Cleaner." With C-Cleaner I do a 7 pass erase thingy every few days before I go to bed to prevent anything I've erased from being easily recovered. Have also purchased a new computer because I've learned that the only way to really be secure is 1) not to use the same devices and 2) use separate internet connections.

Sadly, VPN to mask your IP addy, alone isn't enough and I once thought it was. I'm very grateful that I at least used that, but now that I'm able to make "connections".....I'm pretty sure social media is doing so times 1000. I've just gotten to a place where I don't use social media for my personal life much anymore and this thread is scaring me so much that I may even delete my work twitter lol. I'm really just happy that I have been diligent about only doing certain things from certain devices and thank goodness social media has been one of those things.

As far as facebook, I will NEVER touch facebook. What Erin said is why.

The Social Media is ruled by trolls..

...a provider and clients should not participate in. Previous posters have given good examples of why. Those forums seek connections. The net makes it possible to connect in ways you can't imagine. Once it's out there others can manipulate it. I recommend not using Twitter at all.

email & other accounts.  Yahoo will no longer let you register without a phone number...  I use different free email accounts & do not link them, ever.   I once shopped for an item on Amazon...  I did not like the offering & moved on.  Immediately I'm getting pop up ads for the self same item I decided I did not want.  Totally stalked.  I delete my brousing history often during a session.  I use FB for getting grand-kids pictures but have very tight settings.  I get complaints from relatives.  You can never let your guard down.
