Suggestion and Policy

Hmm... Are you saying that every post on the newbie board should be moderated?

...like the P & R board? It's not a bad idea. It doesn't seem like the board gets that many posts that it would be unmanageable. I say try it and see how it goes.

I know this has been suggested (or at least strongly hinted at) on the Newbie Board, but I feel like it's important enough to formally request here:

The Newbie Board and the veterans who post there offer a wealth of valuable information. Hell, I personally got my start in this business on that very board (which is one of the main reasons that I try to offer my help there whenever I can). That said, there are a few posters who consistently post advice that is stupid at best, but also potentially dangerous.

There will always be a few topics that are controversial to some degree, but for the most part, people tend to universally agree on most general guidelines. I'm not suggesting that reasonable dissenting opinions be moderated (as long as they're presented in a cogent fashion and won't ultimately cause substantial trouble for any newbies). That said, the Newbie Board is what most of us consider to be a "safe space." I think that most of the vets would agree with me when I say that bad advice has no place there.

So I guess what I'm asking is this: would it be possible for downright terrible/nonsensical advice to be moderated on the NB? I'm certain that perfectstorm would be more than capable of taking on that responsibility (assuming that he's willing, of course). I think we can all agree that newbies deserve a certain standard of common sense and reasonable guidance.

What say you, good people?

Don't have all posts on the board moderated, just give ps the ability to remove any post he deems bad advice.  It would be too much work for him to read and approve every post submitted.  Especially since he's in a much different time zone than most posters.

Not that it's so much work to read and approve every message here, it's not nearly as much work as it seems, but it would bring the board to a screeching halt every time PS decided he wanted to take a crap, get laid, or God Forbid, sleep for a few hours.

I agree that giving PS "mod powers" to remove blatantly unhelpful or potentially dangerous posts would keep the flow of the board going and still stop the bad actors from doing any harm.

It'd be super easy for him to just get rid of the bad advice, especially since 90% of it comes from 2-3 repeat offenders.

I would agree with selective moderation, on a bad case by bad case basis.  I don't think they have to get too Fancy about it. (Did you see what I did there? :-) )

Blanket moderation slows down ALL replies, the correct and helpful ones, too. I sometimes sense desperation in the posts of some newbies and getting a quick reply or just a quick acknowledgement can help to put them at ease until additional info arrives.

One thing that would cut down on the problem you describe is a genuine, consensus edited and updated FAQ. "How do I post a picture?" "Where is my ID number?" "Help with my first professional photo shoot."

That would leave more time for the regulars to consider more unique problems that need more specific sorts of help. "Can I review an NCNS? Here's what happened."

So I think that SELECTIVE moderation would be a good thing. If perfectstorm wanted and was granted Mod powers (not just host powers), that could also help.

I've seen a number of individuals whom have given some bad advice or in some cases offer nothing of value of substance.  Even though I have sufficient enough experience, I often read the posts and responses just to keep things in perspective.  Some of what I read should have never been posted.

...If he sees posts that give bad advice, he can report them to TER.  As host, his report may carry more weight with Admin.  Other posters are also free to report any posts that give stupid advice.
