Hobbyists are not whore mongers....

unless I miss the meaning of the word.
A monger is one who purveys or sells, e.g a fish monger, and also one who disseminates something undesirable, per Webster's. That'd be a pimp, right?
But the term is often applied to guys who frequently enjoy the company of whores. I don't consider whores undesirable at all; most I desire greatly. ('specially you, Netti...).
Being called a whore monger offends me even more than "john." I would prefer to be called a patron of erotic performance art-- but hobbyist will do.

I usually see the whoremongering term used in reference to those who frequent SW's, rather than higher priced escorts...???

That's because you usually see the word whore used to refer to SWs rather than escorts.  But sometimes people are not so kind.  See my other post in this thread.

I think there's a general misunderstanding about what it means, and that most people associate the word "monger" with the word "addict".

A war monger = a person who is addicted to the fight.
A whore monger = a person who is addicted to women, sexually, be it on a paid basis or not.
And so on and so forth....

On the other hand, that might just be MY misconception of the word and how people think of it too. LOL.

And for the record, I hate "Hobbiest". ICK!

Begging to differ, I believe a monger is a person promoting or encouraging whatever (war, whores, fish, etc), not an addict.

By definition you are 100% correct. I was only stating when it comes to what the word means my experience with people overall has been that they think of it in different terms. Perhaps "addict" wasn't the best way to put it, but I can't think of the word I'm looking for at the time.

Damn. I had no comment but my computer felt compelled to post/chat. OK, I'll edit this post & comment. I prefer Monger to Hobbyist - why? b/c hobbyist sounds like I'm collecting stamps or pennies. Monger sounds as if you have to get off your ass and exert some energy.

I'm partial to "dog," He's a dog, he ought to be fixed, she's in heat, etc. Blame nature. As far as descriptions of dogs - bird dog, retriever, blood hound, mutt, lap dog, etc., there's adequate descriptions that fit most males. Also, it's not unheard of to hear females on occasion refer to males as dogs.

Makes no sense, dude.  It's OK to call Nettie a ho but you're a patron of eros?  Come on, the term hobbyist is a euphemism, just like the term provider.  Yes, most of us on this board believe that we are good people.  But society takes the contrary view, and that is why words like whore and whoremonger are commonly used.  To be sure, I'm not in the habit of routinely using derogatory terms to describe myself and others.  But I'm pretty sure (without consulting my OED) that the word whoremonger means a man who patronizes whores.  In other words, a hobbyist who sees providers.  Deal with it.

Yes, whoremonger does mean exactly what you say.  So what?  I don't use it, because I don't subscribe to the debasement and shame our culture has attached to our practices.  We won't win in using a term like "whoremonger" defiantly.  If we refer to ourselves with terms of insult, then soon all of us will begin to act like criminals.

I won't refer to myself that way; I won't refer to others here that way-- except in dirty talk, that is.

Remember, there's nothing wrong with euphemisms.  I mean, undertakers have become funeral directors (and undertaker itself was a euphemism).

I prefer to come up with better sounding terms.  I've used "tryster" or "shiftmistress" to describe providers.  I haven't come up with anything for clients yet.

This thread was started by a guy who insisted that the word whoremonger somehow does not apply to him.  It does apply to him.  It's also, as you say, an insulting term, and generally should be avoided.  IMO, we should admit that we live in the world we live in, even as we try to change it, one good shtup at a time.
