The times I've run into that situation, the provider said, "No problem."

I got free day and tried to set something up with a favorite of mine.  Sent an email with the understanding that it was a late notice long shot try.  A few hours go by then I start looking elsewhere.  The next morning I get an email from said favorite, where she asked if such and such a time would work.  I shot her an email right back saying that I scheduled another date but maybe next time.
I got a reply saying that she had already booked that time for me.  Well this really surprised me as I hadn't specified a time, just asked if she had some free time.  I apoligized but thought it would be odd to book a time with out coordinating it.
With email only contact, late minute scheduling can be difficult, but is it wrong to ask around knowing that it will take some time for people to get back to you??
Thanks for any opinions

I don't think you did anything wrong and shame on her if she's chiding you for not making this phantom appointment. I suspect that you have done some last minute arrangements in the past and maybe they worked for one reason or another. I suspect that she was also disappointed that you found comfort elsewhere. Your favorites, remember, have first dibs on your ATM card.

You did nothing wrong at all.  You asked her if she was available at such and such a time.  You did not set an appointment.  She will get over it.

It sounds like she may have re-worked her schedule, maybe got a babysitter, etc., so she could take care of a regular and important client, you.  I would let her know that you appreciate all of that and that you are sorry for the misunderstanding.  On the other hand, I think she goofed by making plans based on an email.  Phone is always best in my book.  It is hard to get firm confirmations by email.
