Maybe, maybe not

Maybe not so much shock value, as I think she opened her mouth and the words came pouring out before she thought about it.  I suspect she must be really, REALLY regretting having said it.

Unfortunately, I didn't see the programme itself so can't tell you how it all transpired.  Sometimes tone and context can be lost in the ensuing brouhaha but even so ...

In fairness, re the comparison with Ibiza, I think that she was saying that if her son went to Ibiza on a drunken week's bender, then the likelihood is that he'd forget about safe sex, whereas that would be more unlikely to happen if he went to a brothel.  I understand what she meant by this.

While I'd have reservations about such a young boy frequenting a prostitute, I imagine the atmosphere of an Amsterdam brothel would be low in a list of options.  But, really, the main thing, I think, is that she ought to have kept her mouth shut.  If this was going to be done at all, it should have been done discreetly.  This boy now has to live with the knowledge that everyone - including putative girlfriends and, yikes, the fathers of girlfriends - will know so much intimate stuff about him.

Here's a story from the UK.

Irish singer Coleen Nolan appeared on a daytime TV show and mentioned that she'd promised her 15/16 year old son a trip to Amsterdam if he did well in his school exams.

The story has caused a minor furore, including condemnation from her actor ex-husband and a number of media pundits.

Interestingly, she also suggested that her fiancé, who would be accompanying the lad, could also enjoy a one-night stand.

I can't help but think she's saying this for shock value.  She should read about the numbers of women trafficked in Europe and then decide if she wants her son to be involved in rape because if a girl is made to work against her will, Coleen's son will be as good as raping her.

She says she talks a lot with her son about safe sex then says if he goes to Ibiza he would  "probably sleep with a different girl every night, with unprotected sex".  Obviously her safe sex message isn't getting through.

We live in this "in-your-face" world and why not let these "commoners" have their 15 seconds of fame when everyone else places little or no value on civility, discretion, respect etc. This is no different from the parents in TN hiring a stripper and inviting other kids from the neighborhood as if this was a socially acceptable way to reward someone for whatever was the reason or for that matter raising kids. People have gone so overboard in this world and they are bored shitless or perhaps it helps her to take the edge off the thankless job of parenting in the in-your-face world in which we exist. If this lady needs to be "affirmed" in some way for having made this public, then it's an even sadder commentary on our incessant need for attention.

Aphra, if the boy is concerned about future girlfriends or their fathers he can choose not to do it.  I have much more concern for the young girls who don't have a choice in the matter than I ever would for the boy.

(But I'm sure you're right, I bet her son wishes she'd kept her mouth shut!)

Well, re the girlfriend thing, that was just my mind going off in one particular direction on his behalf, if you like.:)

Yes, I didn't mean to ignore the issue of trafficking, which is really another separate, major issue.  You will know from our discussions and my earlier posts (see the ones in the UK vs US thread, for instance) that I have raised or referred to the issue of trafficking on a number of occasions in various ways.  I do consider it to be a blight here and in western Europe generally, and not just in terms of the sex trade.

If this boy does get to see a prostitute, then who knows what her circumstances may be, but that applies, surely, to a lot of men who frequent this board.  How many times have you read a comment where the guy reveals that the woman didn't speak English but, hey, you're not there for the conversation, right?  Maybe not often, but I've seen this sort of thing on occasion here.

But this is veering off into another realm entirely.  Issues of trafficking, coercian and duress are always a matter for grave concern, but I'm not quite sure why they should apply to this boy specifically.  It's one factor of many when introducing a youth to the so-called "hobby".

I'm glad to see that you're concerned for the welfare of these girls, Carrie.
