END OF MESSAGE

From Childhood's hour I have not been
as others were
I have not seen as others saw
I could not bring my passion from a common spring
.............
and all I lov'd
I loved alone

Your death 165 years ago this day remains as much of a mystery as your story. And no story written has exceeded your realities

No one has made such contribution to American prose & poetry as you

May the peace that eluded you in life be upon you though the eternities

Thank you

But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we—
Of many far wiser than we—
And neither the angels in Heaven above
Nor the demons down under the sea
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
   Of the beautiful Annabel Lee

He's a tad depressive for me (though Robert Frost is my guy)… but… a toast indeed.

"Those who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by night."
Being an avid daydreamer I love that quote.  :-)

RIP to my EAP.  You've given me many a brilliant, beautiful and chilling moment.

The Telltale Heart. He definitely had a handle on the creepy and macabre!

is great.

And while many scholars have concluded that he did not coin the phrase "Good Fences Make Good Neighbors".

He used it most poetically.

Truer words have never been spoken.

Let me translate "stay on your fucking side of the of the fence and everything will be allrite!!!!!"

In death it was even more so, a true test of a man's eccentricity, if you ask me.  (I know, poor people are crazy, rich people are eccentric.)

Though the attached essay doubts it, some believe that EAP chose a man who detested Poe (The feeling was mutual.) as the executor of his estate.  A true "fuck you" if ever there was one and Poe was just the guy to deliver such a body slam.

Did Poe know that his time was up?

One legend regarding Poe's death has it that a band of Whig supporters grabbed Poe from his train when he was passing through Baltimore on an election day to force him to vote for them, then left him for dead after ruffing him up badly.

Poe, whose health was never that great, perhaps felt he wasn't long for this  world to start.

Another reason to toast EAP is that he birthed an entirely new genre:  The Detective Novel, with his publication of Murders in the Rue Morgue.

An award for mystery writing is named in his honor:  The Edgar.

Yes, let's toast Mr. Poe, but remember to use amontillado please.
