...Look for newbie friendly providers. Check their web sites. They often say if they are newbie friendly or not. This means they will see guys without references. They will want information about you in order to screen you. You will have to decide how much information you are willing to give.
Check out a verification service such as Preferred411 (P411). They have an 800 number on their web site so you can talk to someone and work out a way to be verified. P411 has provider profiles you can search and look for the ladies that have stated they are newbie friendly. Some will see you because of your P411 membership some will still want personal info.
TER VIP membership will let you search for well reviewed providers and allow you to see their TER profile and read their reviews. You being a newbie should stick with ladies that have many reviews and several of those should be by guys that have written many reviews. All of this goes to credibility.
Read the Self-Help center. Read this board back several pages.
Needed to add this: The cost of TER VIP membership is $30 a month. (If need be you can cancel at the end of a month before it auto renews.) Cheap compared to one disappointing session. P411 does cost but again you are spending $250 or more per hour with a provider. It pays to do all you can to make good choices.

Thanks - problem is I don't want just anyone, the ones I want seem to all be with agencies

...state this on their site. It's important to check out the agencies to. Make sure they are reputable. Ask about them on your TER regional discussion board.
In some areas screening is a little tougher right now due to LE activity.
After they verify your employment info, you should be able to find a newbie-friendly lady there.
Present yourself well in your first contact. Polite, brief. Just a sentence or two about yourself. NO sex talk AT ALL. Be specific with the date, time, and length of session that you are requesting. Good communication is always important, but especially for a newbie.
