Seems like joining a third-party site is the best way for now.  Some of my providers seem reticent to trust a third party, but hopefully they will be ok with me switching numbers.

Do people switch phone numbers often?  If so, did you have to start from scratch with references, as they all seem to be tied to a particular phone number?

if you have a burn phone, there is little need to switch numbers.  You want people to be able to reach you, changing numbers just makes that more difficult, not mention the problems you mentioned.

I'm single so I have no need to change numbers, although I do have a Google voice number if I need it.

I have 2 hobby numbers. One is a burner/prepaid number that I change every few months and give to new people I haven't met before.

I have another # that I keep for much longer period of time and give out to people who start becoming more friendly, trustworthy, and text more frequently.

It also costs money on a prepaid number to send / receive 25 tests 50 texts a day from the same person for casual conversations throughout the day.

Occasionally, you'll run into some agencies that only go by phone number and not your email, you will have problems getting reverified with them but these aren't common.

As long as you keep same hobby email around and keep it updated on P411, most seem to not care or at least are ok with you changing numbers.

If there's a problem with matching numbers, I just give tell the provider I've seen that I've changed my number and that she should verify me with that new number.  Using p411 avoids this hassle greatly though

for long stretches.  Never had to switch because of the hobby.  I did have to switch because a debt collector (looking for someone else) kept blowing up my phone every time I turned it on.  So I got a new one & radio silence.  I did give my old & new numbers to my favs.
It's better to disguard a cheap phone if you have any reason to suspect a problem.
