I received HPV from a random partner in my younger days. I'm around 90% certain I know who gave it to me and, worst of all, I was indeed wearing a condom at the time. Which would make sense because when they flair up, they grow right at the base of my penis, presumably at the edge of the condom.

I guess I consider myself lucky that I have the strand that presumably does not cause cancer... would I rather have warts or would I rather have cancer?

My doctor and I both agree, though, that I have a fairly aggressive strain. One grouping comes back pretty quickly after a medicine treatment.

If you want to be really grossed out, do a Google Images search of HPV warts. Fortunately, mine are nowhere near that bad.

FWIW, a huge huge percentage of the population has HPV, but few develop visible signs... many are completely asymptomatic and never know they're a carrier.

Although not a total newbie, I thought this was most appropriate for the newbie board.

Still being a little nervous, I did some research on STDs to educate myself and make sure I was being safe.  I followed up on genital warts which seem to be the most common of all STDs.

From what I found on the internet, this appears to be a real threat as it can be passed from partner to partner by simple skin to skin contact so a condom does not appear to provide adequate protection.

Am I missing something here or is this really that big of a threat?  It would appear to me that if you were in danger of contracting genital warts simply through skin contact (my understanding is that some are actually very small and difficult to see) even while wearing a condom, that it would stop this hobby in its tracks.

Can anyone enlighten me on this?  Research on the internet has me very concerned.  I did a search on this and the general board and did not find much.

Warts are HPV.  Some of the strands cause cancer and the vaccination (Gardasil) protects from the three most common of these.

The other strands cause unsightly, but not dangerous, warts.  I'm not sure, you can check, but I don't think it spreads rapidly, and I think you can have them treated by a regular dermatologist.

This probably should have been a big concern years ago, but as soon as they figured out it causes cancer, they introduced the vaccination.

Vaccination may not be an option for adults (above 21). The vaccination is recommended for people under age 21 sth like that. There is a reason for that. My guess is that the vaccination would take effect on adults.

I thought about getting a dose but gave up later since I'm already above 30. Any people who are over 21 got vaccinated for HPV?

In addition to the advice you have received remember to always wash well with soap/water asap after a session.  that simple act can save you a lot of hassle.

If you can't get to a shower quickly another option is to lather your bits with hand sanitizer
