Start by reading the self help center. As is told to all newbies here, at first see only those providers who have at least 10 reviews written by guys that have written many reviews. You need VIP membership here in order to research providers properly. You might also consider joining one or more of the verification sites. At Preferred411, they will work with you to verify you so you do not have to give out personal information to a number of providers.
Yes, there are risks, after all this is an illegal enterprise in this country. But if you are careful, the risks are minimal. I'm not quite sure what you meant by 'verify these things' in your original post.
