Personally, I like Date-Check.

It's all a matter of preference.  Date Check has a nice gallery search option.   You can also get a lady to "sponsor" you on Date Check and get a few months for free.
Either P411 or Date Check should get you started.
Be respectful when communicating, do not EVER talk about money or sexual comments over the phone or through email.  Here's a suggestion on how to communicate by email:

Real name and contact information.
Date-Check/P411 info and TER info.
Where you found them.
Date, time requested, length of appointment.
A couple of recent references when you get them.
Since you don't have the references, let them know upfront it's your first rodeo.

Depending on the person and their schedule, it may take up to 24 hours to get a response, so don't expect it to be like Domino's Pizza when the urge strikes you.

Don't be terribly upset if she asks for additional information, such as your employment.  Remember, before you get too upset about "your privacy", you are wanting to invade "her privacy".

Be safe and have fun

I've done a little bit of research about having an experience here, but I'd like to make sure I do things right.  Can I just make calls and ask if someone's ok with a newbie, or is there something I can do to make sure I'll get checked out and not scare anyone off, or waste anyone's time.  I'm guessng calling aroud is going to not go well, so I won't try that first.

Gina and her staff will work with you to get you verified.  Calling providers to ask if they are OK with a newbie is def not a good idea.  You can search here for newbie friendly providers, and P411 lets them indicate if they are newbie-friendly.

Followed by VIP here on TER... Both are invaluable for any monger on this adult playground.

Thanks for the advice, I did see they were around.  Is that information I should provide upfront or will someone ask me when I call?

then you can begin requesting dates through that site.
It is very easy.
You'll have to find someone who is newbie friendly for the first date, but that's not too hard either.
Once you have a couple provider okays, then you are on your way to limitless fun...

I heard don't ever use a backpage listing unless they're reviewed here or elsewhere.  Can anyone confirm that?

Awful, but other sites have many scams as well, like Eros. To protect yourself you minimize risk by pursuing someone who has invested time and effort on a website of her own, or has some reviews. She would say this on her post/ad, whether it's on BP, Eros or anywhere else.
