baseball babe ruth
football joe montana
basketball michael jordan
hockey wayne gretsky

this is my list, i am curious what board thinks,

No argument on hockey or basketball, although a solid argument can be made for Wilt Chamberlain.

Football I would have to go with Jerry Rice.  Sustained excellence for almost 20 years.  Montana was great, but he isn't even at the top of my QB list.  That would be Elway.  Went to 5 Super Bowls, 3 of which they had no right being there. Once he got a running back, he dominated.

Baseball is a little tougher with so many great players over the years.  But I have to go with Ty Cobb.  The man hit .367 for his career.  Not many players can do that for a season, let alone a career.

Just my 2 cents.

ok rice is an atf, but montana won in his prime, elway didn't , elway neede terrell to win superbowls, montana never made a mistake in superbowls. he was clutch, he wasnt athletic like elway but he was clutch, peyton and favre are no montana, when favre played against the all time greats he never won, he needed all them to retire to achieve greatness, look at qb in late 70s and 80s,  just like nba 70s and 80s in ,nfl will never repeat, go through rosters, brin sipe, dan fouts, bert jonesm tarkenton, marino, elway, obrien.montana, young, fouts,

look what montana did with chiefs a lousy team, he turned franchise around, steve young only won once, montana 4 .

Agree on baseball, hoops, and hockey.  Football, I agree that Joe Montana was amongst the best.  But, LT has to be rated as best defensive player ever, and had just as great an impact.  No defensive player since had anywhere near the total talent, nor any before that I saw dating back to about 1970.

but i have to be real joe montana was amazing 4 superbowls.LT could do most he can, it wasn't his fault, he had no talent compared to 49ers but still managed to win 2 superbowls, in my opinion if you are talking about greatest nfl players ever  i would link montana and LT 1a and 2b, just when you are a quaterback you control the game more. besides the 86 year, montana was impossible to beat, take all offensive players , montana was greatest, in superbowl he never lost, he was perfect, 49ers have to be the gretest team during there dynasty, but LT changed position, my opinion there will never be another JORDAN,MONTANA,LT, RUTH ever, there legacy wil live forever,i am so lucky i got into sports in 1978 . from 1978 to 1994 you will never see those athlets ever again from nba to nfl again. just look at nba in late 70s and early 80s, look at all these small forwards wilkins, erving, bird, dantley, jordan guard ok, cummings, king, barkley, worthy, centers robinson, ewing, akeem, jabaar, oneal, i know i am missing a ton of players, look at players in late 90s , look at players in 70s and 80s, we will never see such amazing players, look at nba we dont have 1 legitimate center in game . oneal is done, MY 10 CENTS .

Why stop there?  What about tennis, soccer...?  Federer and Pele get my votes.

tennis is tough how about sampras, i think federer is superior, i guess in golf tiger woods wins. in bicyling the winner is lance armstrong, i am sure french will love that.

Sampras and Federer are both excellent picks, but what about Steffi Graf and Martina Navrataliva.  Martina won 167 singles titles, including 18 grand slams.  She won 2 career grand slams in singles.  Martina also won 40 additioal grand slam titles in doubles and mixed doubles.  Only the 2nd player to win career grand slams in singles, doubles and mixed doubles.  While I think that Graf was a better singles player ih her prime, Martina was a better overall player. She laid the groundwork for the modern women's player.  When Evert was the dominant player, Martina came in and dominated her. You can't talk about the best tennis player ever and not mention her.

The Williams sisters are both great players, with Serena clearly the better of the two.  But they have not dominated the way that Martina did.  Serena was well on her way then she "took off" two years and did not continue her dominance.

Clearly Serena in her prime would beat Martina in her prime, as would any modern player beat historical players.  As players evolve, they get bigger, faster and stronger.  It's just human nature.  You have to look at how much better players were in their prime versus the competition.
