Haliburton's liability appears to arise from two sources

1. H may have been negligent in that portion of the cementing process that was completed that was completed before the blowback. While apparently the final cement plug had not been inserted, there are allegations that the preliminary cementing procedures were negligently performed;

      2. more damning is that H appeared to have used shallow water cementing procedures for a deep water well despite knowing that these procedures were untested for deep water wells. H's defense - we just what the contract requires us to do - is no defense at all to failure to warn liability. BP is going to say "they never told us there was a risk here and they are the experts."

Repeat after me: "Apples" "Oranges" "Apples" "Oranges" Do you get it now?

I expect many more will die from the BP oil spill than Katrina once the contaminated fish are stocked in our grocery stores, in the months and years ahead..Hundreds of thousands of gallons of oil dispersants working their way up the food chain will likely raise cancer levels dramatically in the coming years..
For those that live in  Palm Beach Florida , microscopic organisms eat smaller things and bigger things eat them, growing, all the way up  to your dinner table.
I don't blame the oil spill on Obama, and I didn't blame any Katrina deaths on Bush..
I will leave those assumptions to the rampant abundance of Idiots.

Well, not really, but I started to respond, last night, realized I was too tired to be coherent, so decided to abstain. I guess somehow it got sent anyway.

But, I do agree with you in that there will be more deaths, in the long term, due to the spill. It just won't be on the evening news night after night, like Katrina.

Oh I wouldn't say there's no uproar.  On the contrary this is also very bad just different.

I've lost what small amount of respect I had for him and his loser team.  This is so horrible.

Does blaming someone you don't like (i.e., whoever is in the White House at the time) make the problem go away??????

Blaming does nothing towards resolving the issue.

When you make a move to correct a situation, or protect from another catastrophe, you open yourself up to different potential catastrophe, by moving your resources away. Whether it's the oil spill or Katrina, it's still the same problem.

If everyone who does not believe in drilling for oil would quit driving, flying, boating, vacationing, and fill in the blank, we could save a lot of oil..Until there is a better, affordable, alternative technology, oil is necessary.
Don't jump in the deep end if you don't know how to swim.
After the BP catostrophe in the Gulf I am inclined to support  banning drilling offshore..
What I mean by offshore is Federal waters beyond 12 miles  where its often a mile or more from the surface to the bottom of the Ocean..
I would rather look at the rigs on the Horizon when I am visiting the Beach, knowing they are in only two hundred or even a thousand feet of water, and if there was a problem it would be much easier to handle..
The technology and safety inspections, and fail safe systems, involved with safe drilling in mile deep water, is evidently not available to BP ..
Shut off valves or not, a mile is a long ways to go just to start drilling..
I sure hope BP is looking{and being looked at} more closely at its Atlantis rig, which is in much deeper waters..
The consequences of this disaster will be felt for too many years.

What they need to do is  pass   a law that requires the oil company to drill a relief well at the same time the exploratory well is drilled like I think Canada does and also make  the  acoustic switch mandatory.

Would gladly quit driving if there were sufficient public transportation. I take it wherever I can.

On the plus side look at all the extra money for hobby.  I much rather fuck than driving.

Perhaps a different label would be more clear.  Rather than "blame" it is absolutely clear that responsibility for the accident and the subsequent damage must be squarely assigned to BP, the operators of the rig, and Haliburton (the manufacturer and installer of the "blow out" valve).  It is entirely their responsibility.  They owe the US Government every dime of public money spent on the problem, they owe every person affected by the disaster compensation equal to their losses, and they have a responsibility to make sure they don't make the same errors (or more accurately, don't cut corners and disregard safety) in the future.

We're really long overdue in admitting that oil is dangerous stuff.  It may be difficult to face a large revision of our economy, but these things happen too often, for a number of reasons.  Maybe those "go green" folks know more than we realize.

Given over 30,000 deaths per year on the road.

A switch to green vehicles just might cause that number to go up.

Bush vacationed during Katrina, a natural catastrophe that the government had clear responsibility for.

Obama has been on top of BP, but the responsibility lies with BP. They filed inaccurate data with the government, which had its hands tied by Congressional law that required them to approve the permit within 30 days.

For the future, we must put in place a regulatory authority that can fully review and approve applications. It should also have the resources to test all remediation technologies and not approve drilling unless the remediation can handle potential problems.

Unfortunately, the Reaganoid "starve the beast" approach that has controlled our national dialog since 1980 has caused regulation to lag seriously.
