Republicans were also split when asked to identify the most powerful figure in the GOP.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney rated highest with 14 percent, but he was swamped by the 44 percent of respondents who were either “not sure” or would have picked someone other than the eight Republicans listed.

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin finished second among Republicans with 13 percent. She was trailed by Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former Vice President Dick Cheney, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, House Minority Leader John Boehner and House Minority Whip Eric Cantor.

picked someone OTHER than the EIGHT candidates listed...

I wonder what the numbers would look like if it reflected just a bit more honesty and included Rush Limbaugh in that list.

not even going to get into my loathing and contempt for this self-serving pompous megalomaniac demagogue with delusions of grandeur seeping out of his hypocritical pores.
Disgusting. Just like his moronic dittohead lemming followers.

Here is one small example. 4% blame Bernanke. Bernanke assumed his position in Feb 2006. The recession's problems were initiated and baked in long before 2006, and I seriously doubt Bernanke could have prevented the recession. Hence the 4%, if they were smart, should have blamed Greenspan. You can blame low rates for the expansion of the sub-prime market and resulting mess, as well as banks for repackaging of loans by banks.

Is Bush partially to blame? Absolutely! How about Wall Street? Absolutely! How about Barney Frank? Absolutely! How about Americans who bought a home with an ARM, and now are in foreclosure? Absolutely!

Bernanke was a longterm govenor of the FED before taking over. He had a role in creating the crisis before taking over. He could have led the faction that opposed Greenspan, but sided with Greenspan.

those that were polled understand the structure of the FED? Do you think they understand the FOMC, how often they meet, and that Fed Governors can dissent about interest rates and monetary policy? Show me the FOMC statement(s) before 2006, where Bernanke was in agreement or dissent.

My point was the stupidity of these polls. The recession was caused by a number of factors involving a number of people, and organizations in both govt and the private sector. But I assume if you had a poll that drilled down to the specifics of the financial crisis, the respondents would end up having a "deer in the headlight look."

It's not a who; it's a what.  Problems with our economy can be traced to one problem and one problem only.  The greed of the wealthy in this country.  It's greed that causes companies to outsource jobs, hire illegal immigrants, allow millions of immigrants to come over here unrestricted since the 70s, and union busting.  All these things contribute to increasing the company's or wealthy man's bottom line.

The wealthy 1% of this nation have a vested interest in allowing our country to overpopulate like it has.  Since Americans don't have as many kids anymore, they've allowed mass immigration to drive down wages.  More people = less jobs and lower paying jobs while increasing demand for food, housing, and resources that are already scarce.

He is not dictating policy in America and never will.  The Republicans held the White House for eight years and Rush was no more in charge there than the maids and the maintenance staff that took care of the building and its inhabitants.

The first person I would blame would be Nixon, for walking away from Breton Woods. The next person I would blame would be Carter for starting the deregulation mania of our economy, as he did with the airlines. The next person I would blame would be Art Laffer who wrote idiotic economic theories on napkins. The next person I would blame would be Reagan for believing those idiotic napkin theories, for demantling American manufacturing, destroying unions, giving amnesty to illegal immigrants, for tripling the national debt, for cutting taxes on the rich by 50% while doubling taxes on the working class. The next person I would blame would be Clinton for going through with NAFTA. The next person I would blame would be Phil Gramm for pushing through a bill to deregulate the banking industry, which PRODUCED the housing crisis. The next person I would blame would be Robert Rubin and Alan Greenspan for telling Americans to use their homes as ATM machines. The next person I would blame would be George Bush for not doing a damn thing to stop the worse wave of white collar crime in US history.

We're never going to have an economy as strong as we had in the 50's and 60's until we start reregulating the hell out of some of these industries and taxing the rich and corporations.
