Logins are easy to track. They happen only once per user session. So it's easy and efficient to find out how many users are logged in at a given time.  e.g. login, increment the counter; logout, decrement the counter (conceptually--might not actually implement it that way).

But keeping track of what board, i.e. what page, each user is on in real time would require continuous monitoring & logging of every user session. Right now there's over 30,000 of those. Then collect statistics for each board and reporting them, again in real time or near real time. I'm sure it can be done, but it wouldn't be trivial and I'm not sure we'd like the impact on response time. Maybe we could all chip in a buck to buy a big hunkin' server, and some programmer time to do this.  :)

Not a big deal but TER has long listed the total number of users on the site.  But it would be interesting to know how many are on an individual board, especially the GD board.  We know we have lurkers, but it would be nice to know how many on each board.  Presumably the rest are PMing or reading reviews.

... statistic.

how does that help TER to provide stats on the number of users per forum? does that help TER's bottom line?

how does that help to find those "lurkers" as you call them? do you want TER to provide a breakdown of "lurkers" out of a daily total? I can see this... General Discussion Views 1,216... 381 are lurkers. Yea, right... like how is TER going to determine who a "lurker" is? TER has plenty of things to worry about than worrying about the number of "lurkers". please!!

I have a pretty good idea how many have viewed a thread post by looking at the number of 'reads' at the end of the date / time of that post. that's all I need to know.
