Do you have a local center for the arts?

If you have a local community arts center, check with their music department. Better yet, the music department at a local university or community college might be of help.

I may have a lead for you. If memory serves, you're in the Philadelphia area, right?

I apologize whole heartidly in advance for this post, but there are so many diverse people in this industry/hobby I thought I would give it a shot.

As some of you know my 16 year old is an avid Cellist. She taught herself the instrument 5 years ago and passionately loves to play.

A couple of years ago she got a wonderful cello, but in serious need of repair and to make a long story short, I did not have the funds to get her cello out of the repair shop in time before they sold it.

Her Sweet 16 is coming very soon. She is a straight A student, no drugs, no drinking, big bookworm and all around good kid. I decided this year I would love to get her another cello. She hasn't played in some time. What I need is advice or paths to take to find a good "student" cello that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I saw some on E-Bay but that is where we got her last one and it was "new" but by the time all the repairs were done it was in the hundreds of dollars.

Are there any music lovers out there that would know where the best place to purchase a cello is? Could any of you direct me to any good websites or companys that would work with me? Any and all help would be so appreciated..

I do not have VIP status here but you can email me at [email protected]'

Thanks so much

I purchased an instrument (not a cello) from www.music123.com in New Jersey by mail order, and was very pleased.  I took a quick look this morning, and found used cellos starting at $265, and new instruments around $450, if either fits in your budget.

Good luck!

You all have been so awesome with the e-mails. I think I found it...the perfect cello for an extremely reasonable price.

Thank you once again...I think this is going to be the PERFECT Sweet 16 gift.
