I just watdhed "Cool Hand Luke", probbably for the 20th time... but this time it occured to me that it's the perfect allagory for our time; the soul of the individual against the "system".

It is such a perfect movie... I'm sure that there are those how will say that "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" or "The Verdict" was Newman's best movies, but there are two scenes that stand out as totally genuine and real.  Paul's interaction with his "mother", and his monolouge in the Church... They just play so well, especially when compared to the world today.

The triumph of the human spirit... that's what the movie is all about, and I find it a fitting metaphor for life in the 21st century.

I CERTAINLY hope that doesn't offend "Jimmy Saggart"------LOL ! One of the ultimate anti-establishment films of the late 60's. From Newman vandalizing parking meters not to steal, but, to "rile the establishment", to constantly being beaten by the gurds in futile escape attempts & engaging in a marathon hard-boiled egg eating contest, it was a film that constantly challenged authority.

Of course, the line that sums up the film ( & 60's sentiments ), was uttered by that great character actor Strother Martin when he said: " What we have here is failure to communicate".

I was going to mention that... there is a LOT of backhanded references to Christ... after he eats fifty eggs, he even emulates Christ on the Cross, holding his hands out to the side and crossing his legs at the ankles...

And his plea of "Where are you now" when his fellow prisoners basically "denounce" him when he caves in to the Warden/Guards... a reference to "my God, why have your foresaken me".

But while it may have been an allagory for Christ when it was made, to me it is much more pertinent to the world we live in today.  It is a classic example of the individual spirit against the bureaucracy of modern life.

"Cool Hand Luke" was great.

"The Verdict" had to be one of the three worst law movies.  I don't demand realism in movies, as witnessed by the fact that I love musicals, not the most realistic.

However, "The Verdict" was just stupid in the total lack of realism.  The only realistic aspect of "The Verdict" was setting the case up for appeal because all the unrealistic mistakes.

Sundance was an okay movie.  "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" was much better.

Another movie I re-watched recently was Inherit The Wind... talk about totally unrealistic as far as conduct in a courtroom goes, but still, a compelling movie that touched on many social issues of the time.  Sometime we have to "suspend belief" and look at the message rather than the realism... In fact, most courtroom dramas, from Anatomy of a Murder to A Few Good Men are lacking in courtroom accuracy, but are astouding movies none-the-less.

so I can't remember enough detail to comment on it. But I will watch it again and refresh my memory on why I liked it the first time or two around.

...you guys are really OLD. And here I am bemoaning that I'm going to be 32 in a few months. :D

I doubt it. the men in my family have a tendency to die before they're 60.

Sorry to hear that. No, really I am. My family's men are more fortunate. 85 is the average age for going into the light.
