I know this kind of heavy but it needs to be said.....

This month is breast cancer month.....I know alot of young ladies think they don't have to worry about it right now BUT you are wrong......

*Each year in the US alone 10,000 women under the age 40 will be diagnosed with breast cancer...Of these, about 1,000 will be between the age of 20 and 30.....

*Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in women between the ages of 15 and 40

*Young women's cancers are generally more aggressive and can lead to lower survival rates

Because young women have dense breast tissue, mammograms don't work as well for them...However, talk to your health care provider about when you should have one...

See 8 years ago I had a lump in my breast....I went to the doctor about it..."He said to me that I was to young to worry about breast cancer....its a fat lump....I left....

2 years later the lump was still there...I had a check-up with another doctor....He felt the lump ask me alot of quest about it...I told him what the last Doctor said to me...That day was a Mon....The doctor wanted me to go get a mammogram on Wed...

While I was getting my mammogram they found something more...the lump had legs....They told me they needed more test...I said ok I will sit it up...The nurse said we did already we have you down for the testing in 30min....Now I started to get scared....They would not tell me anything more but being a nurse I knew something was wrong....Thur. morning I got a phone call from my Doctor to tell me he wanted to do surgrey....I told him ok...I will have to check my work to make the time ...He said I have you down for Fri at 8am....Now I'm really scared....I call my Mom she got on a plane and was there Thur night...

Fri morning I was there and the Doctor said he wanted to do lumpectomy to test it for cancer ...He also want me to sign papers saying if the lump ( it was a big lump) was cancer  he will take off my breast during surgrey.....I was so scared...In my mind this was not happening to me...It did not run in the family....I was to young....

When I woke-up, I was told it was not cancer....

My Doctor was so aggressive with me because he had a 23yr. last week that died of breast cancer.....

.PLEASE check your breast every month....The best time to check your breast is right after your period...

Thank You
Chay

Some packages of birth control pills now have reminders on the plastic dial about when the best days are to examine the breasts. Isn't that nifty?

It is especially important that younger women pay attention because while breast cancer is less prevalent with younger women, when it does happen, it is usually a pretty aggressive cancer.

Chay - I'm glad that hear that the lump your doctor discovered was benign and that you are using this past experience as a tool to help educate and warn others.

I have a pink ribbon pinned to my purse and another my school bag.  Although I have not dealt with a personal event like Chay, those close to me have encountered its harsh realities. As an avid supporter for Breast Cancer Research, I have been actively involved in several organizations that help to contribute in the funding for its education and awareness.  I will be supporting the stride in SF.  I urge the rest of you to kindly join the cause in anyway possible.

Alluringly Yours,
Aliyanna

This is a really important thread.  I know two survivors personally, one a provider, one a fellow athlete.  So I'll be doing the "Walk for Hope" at City of Hope in LA on Sunday.

There are lots of good choices out there, gang, so everyone do something.

I agree this is serious and if caught early it is curable. Men do some research find out what to feel for and help them out.

I think all the gentlemen in the crowd should lend a hand.

Let there be no provider go unchecked this month. I for one will provide a free breast exam to any and all providers just come to me. If you are in the Cleveland, Akron, Canton area just contact me, my hands are your hands. [email protected]
