I don't remember what the actual stats are (Mathesar??), but by the year 2010 (?-Mathesar??), 50% of America's population will be age 55 or older.
Think about that..
HALF of our population!!..has that ever before occurred in our History?
Think about all that that will mean in this country.
If you think that 911 brought changes you might not have thought about, you can't BEGIN to imagine the changes that will happen as a result of half our population being of retirement age.
Just the health care industry alone..
A year ago, I heard a speaker talk about Caregiving, and she made some very important points. I don't have the company name in front of me (I'll do some looking, however), but she said at one time in every person's life, we are one of these:
1) In NEED of a caregiver
2) ARE a caregiver
3) Have BEEN a caregiver
Her other points that stayed with me, is that by the time you find that you ARE a caregiver, 90% of the time it came SUDDENLY, with no preparation, or 'schooling' on what to do and how. The brochures she handed out to keep in a safe place to refer to for when that inevitable time comes, contained all the information a person will need for that time.
My dear mother has been in a nursing home for 30 years already, due to MS. She was YOUNG when she went in and has been a beacon for us all - and ALWAYS cheerful, never bitter, always inspirational, and now, ironically, she has alzheimer's, or dementia (I have not yet learned the difference).
It's so very, very sad.
I know this isn't a 'fun' topic. I know we don't like to think about ourselves going through this, or our families suffering; and we can't think about our once vibrant parents being so frail. We feel frustrated and unable to help.
I'm glad I had my kids when I was young. The speaker talked about the difficulties of caregiving - particularly when the caregiver has a job to go to, or a spouse, or children at home they also must attend to. She talked about those who are just starting families while in their 40's, and the impact that having them later in life can have. Alzheimer's and dementia are not always an 'old folks' disease anymore..
I didn't want to keep this on the 'down' side, but rather open up some discussion about how our world will change; allow others to talk about caregiving if they wanted, etc.
For example: business. Just about anything relating to health care, and also the caring of 'seniors' will do well..(and their stocks..)
