Every country that isn't the USA (including Canada), Western Europe, and a few countries in Eastern Asia are that bad, and most are worse. Whenever you travel to underdeveloped countries with enormous poverty (i.e. all of them not mentioned above) you will be exposed to corruption and face the risk of crime.

Its fine if you stay in a tourist area. I roamed the streets alone at night, I'm a little under 6" and I'm average size, did not have any trouble.

It just depends where you go and how you act in most countries. I am Latino, so fitting in was easy and I learned the lingo thanks to a friend and some classes, but Spanish is very similar and picked everything up quick.
