The Real Story...

Kudos to the originator of this subject...at least you had courage to ask and not assume you were an expert.
This will hopefully clarify the subject...

Transsexuals (TS) are individuals who strongly feel that they are, or ought to be, the opposite sex.  The body they were born with does not match their own inner conviction and mental image of whom they are or want to be.  Nor are they comfortable with the gender role society expects them to play based on that body.  Hence the need for hormone therapy, sex reassignment surgery, and various types of cosmetic augmentations and surgeries.  There are some individuals who are not inclined to have sex-reassignment surgery for a variety of reasons.  Some of these reasons are that it is expensive and health insurance does not cover it, or certain health or age issues that would preclude the recommendation for surgery.  Also, a primary factor, especially in a forum such as this, is the economic considerations of continued desirability as a TS provider.  In any case, a persons level of need for surgical intervention to correct the incongruency of gender dysphoria is a personal decision and should never be chastised or the experience minimized by a population who has not personally experienced gender dysphoria.  In addition, the physical attributes that a transsexual person is so inclined to obtain or not obtain will have absolutely no impact on their own inner conviction of self other than to help them feel more comfortable with their sense of self.
Transvestites (TV), or Cross-Dressers (CD), are individuals who wear clothing of the opposite gender primarily for erotic arousal or sexual gratification, although some do so for emotional or psychological reasons as well.  Typically, transvestites are heterosexual, married, and/or well-educated males.  Persons in this population clearly identify as male and have no desire to change that.  There is a segment inside this population who also acts in this regard to shelter or justify homosexuality.  Sexual Orientation and Gender Identification are two completely different components of the human psyche an should never be confused with each other.  Also, often times the term Shemale is applied to this segment but in fact the term is a simplistic and derogatory term that has roots only in the Porn Industry.  It is for the sole purpose of readily identifying for purveyors a specific fetish grouping of the industry but in fact is not an accurate description of this population.  It cannot be accurately applied to the Transsexual for the simple reason of the “male identity” implication, which they do not have.
Drag Queens are gay males who don opposite gender clothing for their own erotic and sexual pleasure or for that of a partner who is attracted to the opposite gender presentation.  Drag Queens self identify as male.  They view their bodies as appropriate to their gender identity and almost never desire reassignment surgery or opposite gender specific augmentation.   Impersonators, be it either female or male, are persons who wear the opposite gender apparel to entertain a theater audience.   They take great care to mimic the opposite gender in every respect while on stage.  This type of cross-dressing is primarily an acting job or stage performance, nothing else.
Gender Benders are males or females who challenge and cross over traditional gender boundaries in usually outrageous ways.  They dress and behave to surprise and shock.  An example is men who wear dresses but have full beards.  A Gender Bender’s gender identity is usually not at issue as much as their need display an act of rebellion or a need to make a societal statement.  They definitely do not desire to have reassignment surgery.

By the way, I not only teach this in a variety of professional forums across the country, I also live it.

Thank you! I'l be appearing all week! :)

Ok... Here's the street definition.

TS (transexual) is a preoperative transgender who is going thru the transition of male to female. The TS lives 24/7 as a transgender.

Shemale (transexual) according to Hoyle is happy with the transgender anatomy, she does have breast, takes hormones and most often not ready for SRS (sexual reassignment surgery).. She also lives 24/7... The term Shemale, however, is most often used to describe both Preop and non preop transgenders.

TV (transvestite) is a male who dresses as a female part time.. Also known as Crossdresser or drag queen. They are not transgender, do not have breast, do not take female hormones and are not 24/7. Often they will pass themselves off as TS when escorting and in many cases you can't tell. In many cases TS start as TV untill they make the commitment and begin the process.

Post-Op Transgenders have had the SRS and for all intent and purposes are 99% female.. They still have to continue hormones.

TS (Transsexual) can be either male or female. It refers to a person who has one sexual gender and another sexual identity; in other words, external male genitalia but female thoughts, feelings, identity (or vice-versa). A transsexual desires to live his/her life as the opposite sex. Some have sexual reassignment surgery and some do not. Some have plastic surgery (breasts, hips, ass, lips, etc) and some do not. Some take hormones and some do not.

A TV (Transvestite) is a person of either sex who dresses as the opposite sex. We are talking about dressing here; some do it because they like the clothes. Some like to explore the wild side. Some do it to make money as an escort. Many transvestites do not have homosexual sex at all, they just like to dress that way.

A shemale is specifically a person with male genitalia dressing, acting, and/or living as a woman. He may be a TV, a pre-op TS, post-op TS, or just a good actor.

A TV is not a Shemale by any stretch of the imagination.

At best he is a Female Impersonator..... Providers such as Susanna or Kayla Coxx may argue this since they are TV but to no avail.

From The Albany Gender Clinic - transexual hormones, counselling and gender reassignment:

Shemales:= welcome feminising hormone treatments in order to grow their own breasts and attain the hourglass figure and features associated with being female, but they want to stop short of surgery or loss of sex drive. Such treatment is possible and available, either clinic based or for home use. Physically there are very few problems in pursuing such a course and many shemales appear to be stunningly attractive women!

Transvestites:=  enjoy cross dressing and looking like a convincing woman on occasions, but they basically value their masculinity and enjoy, during the rest of their life, the pursuits and interests traditionally associated with being male.
It is important not to feel guilty about having a desire to cross dress. It is more common than most people think and if kept in proportion provides a great release from the pressures and tensions of being a male with responsibilities. Transvestites are divided between heterosexuals and gays in the same proportion as the rest of the male population, which means many are happily married with children. TVs often make better husbands and fathers, as their feminine streak makes them more thoughtful and understanding of women, and more patient with children.

doesn't mean that i do :)

one of the things that i was getting at was that while "transvestite" and "transsexual are medical terms with specific meaning, "shemale" is not. i think the term was created by the porn industry, actually. the albany gender clinic is not exactly a respected source of medical information - when i read the passage you quoted, i don't hear medical information, i hear a commercial enterprise promoting and selling SRS.

anyway, i'm not looking for an argument; the only thing we seem to disagree on is that i say anyone who looks like a woman but has a penis is a shemale, while you say it takes more than clothes and makeup to make the woman - yes?

Yes beevis.. We only disagree on the Shemale issue.. Though Eliana finds the term degrading most "shemales" that I've had the pleasure of knowing on a personal level over the years do not. Perhaps in the terms inception, but it has become a positive phrase to us hobbiests to describe those transexuals (not TV's) that we adore. Yes.. the Porn Industry has raised the level of interest in Shemales and helped bring them more acceptance....To that we owe a big thanks.

No argument meant here fellow hobbiest... just friendly discussion and points of view..... In the same breath I must say That nothing posted here by ANYONE is more than opinion no matter what resource or credentials they boast. It is in the eye of the beholder. To me a Shemale is a woman of beauty and not a guy in drag.

I am a pre-op TS and although my ad is listed under the "shemale" catergory of various sites, I find the label insulting.  It IS a term invented by the porn industry for the sake of guys looking for a specific type of porn.  We use the phrase "Shemale" primarily to attract the men who are looking for us.  There are girls out there who say they are ok with it, but generally any girl who has stuggled to become a woman does not want to be labelled a "shemale".  And a lot of girls don't even want to be labeled "TS".  Transition is a stage just like puberty so to spend my life working to become the woman I really am, why would I continue to label myself a TS for the remainder of my life.  I will be a "woman"!
