Sedona, I wasn't wondering about drug use in business, I was pondering how people react when they feel their competitiors have the edge, are they tempted to be unethical in an attempt to improve their [business] performance.

I totally agree with you on the drug testing issue.  Do I want the guy flying the plane I'm on to be using drugs?  No way!  Do I care if the dental receptionist is a party girl at weekends?  No way as long as she does her job during the week!

After the fiasco right before the Games with the two Greek athletes and their missed tests and supposed motorcycle accident,  I’ve been watching the Olympics and wondering just how many top flight sports people are taking performance-enhancing substances.  Do you think any one who is totally clean could compete in, say, athletics?

How can somebody who’s greatly talented, devotes their life to training and looking after themselves to be at their best for their sport compete with somebody who is equally as talented, devotes their life to training and looking after themselves to be at their best for their sport AND takes performance enhancers?

I think many athletes must come to the conclusion it’s best to cheat and do well than be clean and fail because they think that’s what everybody else is doing.  I wonder how much this goes on in other ways in everyday life eg regular business or providing.

Obviously since Britain isn't winning many medals I've been spending my time thinking rather than cheering! :)

I'm just glad that "performance inhancers" are allowed in the Hobby. Seeing that you ladies have the ability of being mult-orgasmic it's only fair that we guys can look to Viagra for that extra "staying power".

You got me thinking…

I understand that Viagra works by improving blood flow (dilating capillaries, if I remember right). It doesn’t give you a hard-on; it makes it possible for a natural hard-on to occur.

OK, so does it not make sense that the same Viagra would enhance blood flow to the muscles (the whole body, actually) and could therefore enhance athletic performance? Enhanced blood flow would equal increased oxygen and energy thingies (to use the technical term) to the muscles.

Seems plausible to me. I wonder if Viagra and its kin are on the dope-test list of bad drugs – especially as it is something one could take AFTER passing the drug test. Look for athletes with flushed faces before the event!

Do they also have a post-event pee test for athletes like they do for horses?

Hmmm..

In the NCAA's everyone that finished with points and a couple of randoms peed at every meet that "counted"... Like nationals, or qualifiers for meets that led to Olympics, etc.

Unfortunately, atheletes learned to "cycle" the drugs, so that they were out of their systems at the actual event.  The drugs made them nice and strong, then were long gone for the pee test.

Human Growth Hormone, unless you test within 20 minutes of actual injection, isn't going to show up with current testing... but the anti doping committee is working very diligently to find tests that will show banned substances including the Human Growth Hormone, and they aren't going to announce that they've found the test.. they'll merely spring it on the athletes at a random test.

I still want to know who allowed trampoline into the olympics.

I've often felt that the employer drug testing was unlawful, and not necessarily something I agree with for many industries.

Doctors, pilots, heavy equipment operators, yeah..but, say, receptionists?

To me, unless it is apparent that someone is not performing well on the job, having some real issues, or is somehow endangering someone else, I'm not really all that much for testing.
And what do most tests test for? Narcotics, right?

Well, the most 'dangerous' people I've worked for were heavy users of OTC items - decongestants, cold medications, etc., or, for that matter - alcohol, caffeine and sugar - the latter which made people whacked! LOL

businesses act unethically.

What I saw in my position at work used to turn my stomach.
Corporations are pretty 'dirty' and lack integrity.
Hmm..much like politics.

I guess most feel the 'end justifies the means'.

That's why I'm a strong promoter of self-employment and support that trend..

I decided long ago as a top notch athlete I didn't want to be an olympian because the top javelin thrower looked like a man.

No thanks!

But as I watch the sports, I see all of these guys.. ok male swimmers, specifically with these HUGE jaws and teeth and I'm thinking, "Is it because they're wearing little swim caps and it's making their faces look big, or?"

Well then you see them getting interviewed the next day and almost all of them have these jutting out chins that look well, like they GREW TOO BIG.. growth hormone?

The gymnasts, on the other hand, are muscular, and little and they're just tiny little marvels that work hard at what they do and hope they "Don't grow"  They only get thrown out when they take something like sudafed, which is no longer banned.

So yeah, it's a part of the deal.   When a woman has shoulders the size of a pro wrestler... you have to wonder.

The anti-doping committee will catch up with them and the times will stagnate in many sports.

But who in the heck decided trampoline was a sport, anyway?

was stripped of her gold medal.

Ya know I'd love to be the one to strip you sometime, Carrie!  **wink**

I think there is a comparison with providers: breast enlargement is kind of similar to using performance enhancing drugs.  Personally, I am not a big fan of the fake stuff in any sport.

This might all just come to an end. They are saying that they will take a urine and blood sample and keep it for as long as they want. In other words if you win an event today, and they test your samples a month or two from now, you could still lose your medal.

who have never and would never use performance enhancers. My brother is a professional triathlete (Oh how I hope to be in Bejing four years from now watching him!), and he has *never* considered taking performance enhancers or any kind of drugs. He's as clean as they come. However, his *entire* life is dedicated to triathlon training. He is consumed by training. I'm positive it is the first thing about which he thinks when he awakes and the last thing about which he thinks when he finally falls asleep. I wouldn't be surprised if he's a tad bit O/C (ok, a LOT O/C). For him it's a lifestyle to which he's become accustomed. Additionally, he holds the view that his body is his temple AND his professional/financial livelihood. He is a vegan, eats very little whole grains (no refined grains), eats no sugar and drinks no alcohol. Oh yea, about the big looking heads - my brother sometimes looks like he has a big head. I think it may have a lot to do with the fact that he has only 4% bodyfat. I have no idea where that 4% is, because I certainly cannot find it.

Hahahahahaha...and then there's me! I know people look at him and me and think, "Ewwww...I HOPE that's not his girlfriend!"

just to keep things fair, and not be at an unfair disadvantage.

The decision not to cheat has to come from a strong self-image as an ethical person, one that is strong enough that it is more important than winning.
