I can't help but think about when I was growing up in the late 60's and 70's and all the crap I had to take about my long hair, my dress, the music my band played, etc.

We were who we were and did not give a crap about accepted social 'standards', that were an image of a culture we chose to differentiate (sp) from.

I really don't see any difference in today's penchant for tatoos or piercings. These are expressions of individuality and show some insight into how a person wants to express themselves.

I'm sure some of the guys that posted strong opposition to either tatoos or piercings may have been been part of the 60 - 70's counterculture.

What puzzles me the most, is how easily they have forgotten those beliefs. And have even developed an extreme intolerance for individuals today, that are acting the way they did years ago. This attitude would have been unthinkable in their younger years.

So what the hell happened? Did you forget about your past and choose to join the mainstream thinkers? Choose to be totally acceptable to only what your neighbors or children of your friends parents think? Is it all an act?

Maybe I'm off base here. It's just that my experience with my ex wife and other close friends, causes me to see a pattern of intolerance among people who PREACHED total tolerance of others in their past. How soon we forget!

Open your minds, learn new things! Accept what you don't understand and try to learn more about it. You say it's ugly or unatractive? Maybe it's just a case of not knowing where the hell they are coming from.

What happened to that concept?

Hi,

"I really don't see any difference in today's penchant for tatoos or piercings. These are expressions of individuality and show some insight into how a person wants to express themselves."

I f people want to express themselves, they should write a book, or paint a picture!!!! I am not a fan of tattoos or piercings, but that's just me!!! ;o)

expressing individuality should be respected but it has its price

If they don't have their organized religion, soy cafe lattes, or the right of way in traffic, right now, they will (*gasp*) suddenly see the box they are cemented in. So why make them more unhappy? God loves all of his/her children. (Wink) I know how it goes. I am sure they all just "inhaled" and "did not have sexual relations with that (tattooed/pierced/wanton) woman..." Gotta taste rthe ice cream to know you hate it. Lick. Lick.

BRU-HA-HA-HA!

Dissenter within the paradigm.

Try doing that with the Mona Lisa!

I love that opening picture on your website.  That is another great piece of art.  I'm hoping in the end, the letters won't be across it, though.

Right on.  But there's no accounting for taste.  Some people choose to cover themselves with tattoos in a manner which distracts from the form of their body (IMHO).  But that's their business, unless they want me to pay them to enjoy the way they look.
Some tattoos are great, but some appear kind of embarrassing.

Dude,

You sound surprised.  Look around, look at today's social environment. The 60s generation turned out to be easily the most materialistic and hypocritical generations to ever pass (more like plunder) through American society.

But that's kinda beside the point, because I don't understand your questions in the first place.

I read the tatts/piercing thread and I missed the great social condemnation you seem to have read into it.

It sounded to me like a bunch of guys were stating their preferences, not creating some kind of new untouchable caste system for pierced/tattooed people.

Personally, I don't object to a small tattoo, or a belly peircing.  But I don't like a lot of tattoos, and would not go near a genital peircing.  It turns me off, plus it is a potential hygiene problem.

That's just my preference.  Aren't we entitled to those in your idealistic free love utopia as well?

I grew up in the 60-70's and remember the stigmas of tatoos and piercings at the time.  However, now that everybody has them it seems to be more of a individual statement to be different by not having them.

I can say that I would probably not do either myself just to be like all the rest of the "cool" people.  However, I don't really care one way or the other if somebody else does.  They don't do anything for me but I tend to look at other qualities of people before I develop any thoughts about them.  Characteristics that are not superficial mean a lot more to me.
