I thought of a possible solution... have you thought of this?

Instead of renewing, just take your driver's test again using your current social security card.  Get a brand new, friggin, unrenewed driver's license issued.  Since you've been driving years and years, passing the tests should be a slam dunk.

If you've already thought of this, have they closed this loophole?  I don't know how long the process takes in your state.  In mine, I could get this done in a single day.

It's really no wonder that people go 'postal'. Seriously.

You heard the first part of the story. Driver's License expired; I renewed by mail; it didn't arrive 6 weeks later, so I called the DMV and they said that the SS card and DL name doesn't match EXACTLY, so I have to change the SS card, and then notify the DMV when that's done, yada yada..
OK..sounds like a hassle but not THAT big of a deal, right?

No..
I downloaded the forms off the SS website and you are to read the 3 pages of instructions first, which I did, jumping to the part about Name Change first..

Name Change has these document Requirements listed. Problem is, I don't HAVE most of the legal documents required. Nor the time to obtain them at this time (too long a story..).
OK..so I decide to call back the DMV and just say, hey, since my DL reads a LONGER, more formal name than my SS, why can't we just cut out the middle names and then it WILL match my SS card?
I mean more is usually better and you have MORE than my SS card, so it makes sense, no? Well, of course NOT, but I wanted to try. If you're with me so far, we're at the EASY part..

Problem is..25 years ago I got this GREAT idea (not!) to 'honor' my then father in law by putting the "Old Country" version of our true last name on my DL, which up until NOW has been just fine. According to the DMV, I needed documents that read the same, which I told her there ARE no documents with that name because it doesn't EXIST. Anywhere. Except in the Old Country. It died at Ellis Island. Well, sorry, ma'am, you must have documents showing THAT name in order to UNDO them in that name and in order to proceed to change it.
SHIT. I'm screwed. I have no IDENTITY. (Might as well go by my Provider Name..!)

Two weeks ago I went to my PO box, which I only visit maybe once or twice a month (since I don't use it much). The key wouldn't work. Since I've known quite a few people who had a PO box and one day they discovered it had been rented out to someone ELSE (I guess the Postal service 'forgot' it was already rented..), I had to inquire what the deal was. Seems two days prior, the rent had expired and the clerk reminded me that I 'should have' known. Do any of you have that magic expiration date for your PO box in your mind? Darn..I slipped.
Oh, I said..I didn't realize that. Why wasn't I notified?
You were. We put a slip in your PO Box two days ago...

Yep..no wonder people go postal..

Welcome to Kafkaland; with Homeland Security nowadays peaking down every dark alley (but not, by the way, interviewing Middle Eastern men 17-40 years of age, because that would be profiling) we all have to have our names and be able to prove it. How many of us have changed one thing or another when we're young and then thought better of it, then along comes 19 crazy religious assholes and we're all in trouble with Uncle Sam.

What to do? You did not tell us which state you're in, but if you were in LA it would be easier (all the illegal aliens get their identities at MacArthur Park--no shit, you can see them lining up on Sundays). Seriously, this is the ONE THING that you need to stand in line at the DMV with all the illegals and do it face to face with one of those clerks (or, better yet, a supervisor, as the clerks rarely speak English) and get it right. If they can't do it for you, then you had best and quick get yourself an attorney to straighten it all out. It won't cost much and you could get it done before it takes too much sense of humor out of your day.

Good luck, and let us know how you make out.

I'd gripe to your state rep, senator and gov.  And then go fed.
