I gotta admit I was intrigued but when I read
"When the prostitutes were massacred on stage I had to leave,"
I too would have trouble stomaching that. I guess I love providers too much to watch violence in anyway toward them. I don't have trouble watching violence toward civilian women(they NEED a good kick in the teeth)but I deplore violence toward providers staged or otherwise.
Netty I'll have to cover my eyes during the above mentioned scene but I would still love to take you to this opera when it comes to SoCal.

In the time of the Opera, this was the political voice of the art world...and took issues like this all the time! Ok, they were not  as blunt as this...but for its day...it was considered "a scandel" in many of the social circles.......

Damn some people are just sooooooooooo dumb......

Good job NM....this is a great post!

The most "revolutionary" of the operas was Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro".

It's historical context is discussed at length in Jacob Bronowski's "The Ascent of Man".

The real name for it is mutilating.

Nightmare and mutilation are very different.

But I have to confess, besides the music, the performance of opera has never interested me.  It seems to be practiced more like a compulsion than an art.  At least I could say this one isn't a compulsion, therefore opera fans will hate it first for that reason.  But non-fans might be tempted to see this one, only to be sneered at by the fans.

Nevermind that the breaking of a compulsion usually requires something shocking and  grotesque.

If I'm ever tempted to go and see and opera, all I have to do is hear a fan talk about it, and suddenly pop music seems attractive.

It really is a nice opera -- much of it is in the movie Amadeus.  Anyway, the reviews have been pretty poor and there have been boos, but they sure are selling tickets!

Think this production will come to the MET? -- no way.
