that allows you to select & right-click to search TER reviews directly from an Ad.  For example selecting a phone number to search TER reviews.

Wow, something MrFisher doesn't know ... I didn't know that was possible!  :) ;)

It seems that the good people at Google have  decided to protect me from myself a bit more.
They just disabled my TER browser extension. I was really attached to it! And they won't let me re enable it. I just downloaded it for Firefox so I'm good.

Here's what they tell me:

"Suspicious extensions disabled

You're seeing this notification because one of your Chrome extensions has been turned off to make Chrome safer. The extension didn't come from the Chrome Web Store or was installed without your permission.

For your protection, you can only use Chrome extensions that you get from the Chrome Web Store.

To see a list of your extensions...

Click the Chrome menu Chrome menu on the browser toolbar.
Select Tools.
Select Extensions.
Extensions that have been disabled are grayed out and you won't be able to re-enable them."

Developers and consumers were warned sometime ago that external apps for Chrome would be disabled and all apps had to be downloaded through Google Web Store.

They safety reasons were valid as I know of instances were consumers actually downloaded spyware disguised as extensions. These extensions were not popular so it took sometime before anyone caught on that these extensions were actually spyware. On the other hand extensions in the Web Store have already been tested and vetted by Google. Any changes to the extension would need to go through Google as well.

It is a nice convenient excuse for Google to make such a move. Their primary reason is to maintain total control over Chrome extensions. It allows Google to study consumer download, usage and traffic habits and find a place to paste more ads.

These guys are getting creepier by the day!

What does an "extension" do and why would a user want to have one as opposed to just viewing TER normally?

If I modify someone else's computer I can be thrown in jail and harassed to the point of suicide.
They/Chrome/Google should be prosecuted for modifying MY computer WITHOUT my permission.  They should have had a popup asking if the user wanted to disable individual extension.

I hate how each "improvement" is really taking control away from the user.

...so it is difficult to completely get away from them but I'm trying. I communicated with them yesterday and expressed my displeasure. I'm getting rid of anything google such as my gmail account. There is an article about their google+ and how they are forcing it down everyone's throat. It's on the real clear politics site.
